  2. Hawaiian Facts • Cool trade winds tend to keep Hawaii around 70 degrees Fahrenheit. • Hawaii makes most of its money on tourism.

  4. Hawaii was formed millions of years ago when a volcano erupted in the Pacific Ocean. The Polynesians came about 2,000 years ago. James Cook spotted the islands in 1778. In 1894 Hawaii became a republic. Early History • King Kamehameha I was Hawaii’s first ruler.

  5. Pearl Harbor was bombed on Dec. 7, 1941. Hawaii became the 50th state in 1959. In 1992 Hurricane Inki ravaged Hawaii. In 1898 the U.S. annexed Hawaii. They also established the territory of Hawaii in 1900. Gov. John A. Burns U.S. History

  6. Hawaii, being the largest island, has an area of 4,038 square miles. It has a population of 158,428. It is made of 5 volcanoes. Hawaii

  7. The Polynesians originally inhabited Maui. Captain Cook discovered Maui on Nov. 26, 1778. Today it holds 117,644 or more people. Its area covers 727 square miles. Maui

  8. Oahu has a population of 900,000 and has a area of 608 square miles. It’s also called the “Gathering Place”. Oahu

  9. Kauai has a population of 54,200 people and a total area of 559 square miles. Lilo and Stitch was set here. Kauai

  10. Lanai has a population of 2,426 and has an area of 140 square miles. The island’s income is mostly based from the Dole® pineapple plantation. Some tourism is being phased into the income. Lanai

  11. Moloka’i • Moloka’i has an area of 261 square miles and a population that ranges from 6,000-8,000 depending on the season. • Moloka’i is built from the volcanoes East and West Moloka’i.

  12. Niihau is about 70 square miles and has a population of 140 or more. It’s the oldest island on which only government, military, and family members are allowed. The “Forbidden Island” allows restricted tours. Niihau

  13. Kahoolawe • Kahoolawe has an area of 45 square miles and is uninhabited. • In Sometime around 1000 A.D. it was settled for fishing purposes.

  14. Honolulu • The capital of Hawaii. • The bombing of Pearl Harbor happened in the navel base.

  15. Hilo • Hilo is the largest city on the island of Hawaii. • It holds 1/4 of the island’s population and the University of Hawaii.
