  1. Platte City Middle School 2010 - 2011 Our Year of Success…

  2. August • Began writing to various authors and publishers concerning spectacular books written for teens. • Three publishing houses are currently sending Advanced Reading Copies to PCMS so that our students can read teen best sellers before they are available to the public.

  3. Swim the Fly • Wrote to Don Calame, author of Swim the Fly, to let him know the impact his books have had on our classroom. • Boys are reading, reading, reading because of his books. • Began e-mail correspondence about individual student success. • Don sends e-mails to his publisher, Candlewick Publishing in New York City.

  4. September • Students participate in Letters About Literature contest. • Seventy-five entries from PCMS. • 1,037 entries state-wide. • Results announced in April.

  5. Tri-County/Mix 93.3 PSA Announcement Contest • All students participate in a contest open to middle school and high school students to design a public service announcement concerning No Smoking. • Shelbe Shoop, Emily Boe, Madi Snow, and Emma Testorff win 1st place over schools such as NKC High School, Oak Park HS, Staley HS, Smithville HS, and Park Hill and Park Hill South HS. • Radio ad is featured on Mix 93.3 online radio streaming.

  6. October • Participated in Patriots’ Pen Essay Contest sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. • Over 40 entries from PCMS. • Dana Swisher announced as 1st place winner in regional competition. • Dana receives $100 and a plaque at an awards dinner in January.

  7. Swim the Fly Reading Contest & Visit From Don Calame Planned • Candlewick senior publishers so taken with PCMS story that they design a reading contest: The student who reads the most books gets his/her name in Don’s next book. • Even in the early months of the school year, the clear winner will undoubtedly be a girl, so Candlewick and Don decide that there will be TWO winners – one boy and one girl. Winner announced in late May. • Don and Candlewick ask to come visit our classroom in early spring to meet our reluctant male readers who now love to read. • http://www.doncalame.com/dirty_laundry/2011/04/

  8. January • Over 50 Scholastic Art and Writing entries sent in to Prairie Lands Writing Project from PCMS eighth grade students. • Notified in early March that PCMS has three wins this year. Students were invited to Tan-Tar-A for an awards assembly. • Second Place – Leighanne Farnsworth • Honorable Mention – Jake Adamek • Honorable Mention – Tara Hutchison • PCMS has distinction of most wins (8 total) of any middle school in Eastern Kansas (including Olathe, Blue Valley, and Shawnee Mission districts, and Northern Missouri (including Lee’s Summit, all Kansas City public and private middle schools, as well as all St. Louis public and private middle schools. • http://www.missouriwestern.edu/scholastic/winners2011.html

  9. April • Notified that two PCMS students out of four winners for Level II won the Letters About Literature contest. • 1,037 entries state-wide. • Students, teacher, and Mr. Lightfoot and Mr. Miller traveled to Jefferson City. • Leighanne Farnsworth – 2nd Place • Kimber Autrey – Honorable Mention • Students were honored with a resolution from Nick Marshall and received their state awards from Secretary of State Robin Carnahan. • http://books.missouri.org/

  10. Visit from Don Calame • Don Calame arrived at PCMS on April 20th greeted by standing ovations and a student-centered assembly. • Fox 4 News, The Kansas City Star, The Platte County Citizen, and The Landmark covered our story. • Out story was picked up by wire services.   11. School Library Journal-Teen • The School Library Journal asked me to write our classroom story. • The initial request was for a 400-word story for their May 4th edition. • SLJ-Teen published our complete 1500-word story. • It is currently available on-line. • http://www.libraryjournal.com/csp/cms/sites/SLJ/Newsletters/SLJTeens/SLJTeen_05042011.html
