  1. Julington Creek NEWSLETTER News about the collective work at the Julington Creek church of Christ and updates on individuals and families. Volume 2 Issue 14 April 7, 2013 Isaiah 53: The 5th Gospel The fifty-third chapter of the Book Of Isaiah is one of the best known and beloved chapters in all the Bible. It has garnered the distinction of being the “fifth gospel” because it speaks so clearly of the suffering, death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. While Matthew, Mark, Luke and John give us the account of Christ’s ministry and sacrifice in hindsight, Isaiah prophecies of a future Messiah whose sacrificial death would enable all sinners to be “healed.” Isaiah 53 is one “song” of the four “Suffering Servant songs” in the book. These four passages are known as “songs” in the sense of the “Song Of Solomon,” that is, they are written in the ancient genre of Hebrew poetry and wisdom literature. The four passages in Isaiah that describe this suffering Servant are: 42:1-7; 49:3-7; 50:4-10; 52:13-53:13. They speak of the atoning sacrifice of a Servant who is despised and rejected yet obeys to the point of death and is therefore highly exalted by God. This is our Jesus! Our savior divine. The following is an outline that we will follow in the next 3 or 4 sermons as we explore this magnificent chapter. Verses 1-3. ARM OF THE LORD. Verse 4. BEARING OUR BURDENS. Verse 5. RECEIVING OUR PUNISHMENT. Verse 6. CRUSHED FOR OUR REBELLION. Verses 7-9. THE TRIAL, TRAGEDY, TOMB. Verse 10. DEATH BRINGS LIFE. Verse 11. SATISFIED THROUGH SUFFERING. Verse 12. EXALTATION OF THE SERVANT. Wounded For Me! dlf
