  2. Reminders • Meetings start at 3:15 PM every Wednesday. Be sure to arrive on time and sign in. • Inappropriate behavior will not be accepted in this club. • Geek 101 permission slips and money are due today. See Mrs. Palmer (NOT I.T.) to turn in permission slips and money. Mrs. Palmer’s office is located on the left side of the boys’ restroom (across from the main office). • Let us know if you are attending, bringing your own lunch, chaperones, etc.

  4. Types of Networks • LAN (Local Area Network) • WAN (Wide Area Network) • Wireless and access points

LAN (Local Area Network) • LAN, abbreviation for Local Area Network, is a type of network in which several computers are connected locally in one area, such as your home, an office building, or a computer lab (such as this one). • To establish a local area network in an area, the computers need to be plugged up with an Ethernet cabling and have a Wi-Fi connection (two of the most common technologies used)

  7. WAN (Wide Area Network) • WAN, abbreviation for Wide Area Network, is a type of network in which several computers are connected in a broad area using public or private transports, such as a business or college campus.

Wireless/Access Points • A wireless network allows an electronic device to exchange data wirelessly over a computer network. • Any wireless device can connect to the Internet through an access point. • An access point device that allows wireless devices to connect to a wired network using Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or any similar standard.

  11. Tips • Change default administrator passwords and usernames • WPA/WEP encryption • Change the default SSID (network name) • Do not auto-connect to open WiFi networks • Enable firewalls
