Germany divided into east and west (1949) • At the close of World War II, The Soviets occupied the Eastern portion of Germany, while France, Great Britain and the US occupied the western half. As tensions began to harden between the Soviets and their former allies in the West, the division became more and more complete, and the creation of the Berlin wall and two separate German governments was the eventual result.
What happened? • The United States and Soviet Union began to distrust each other. Both had nuclear weapons and feared they could be used on each other. • Each nation wanted to be the strongest in stature!

Korean War • Communist North Korea wanted to take over Democratic South Korea to make one nation. • The United States saw this as a direct threat to democracy, and got involved in the war.
