  1. Aim: What are the number system and order of operation? Do Now: 1. Write a few numbers as you like 2. Try to categorize the numbers you just wrote HW: Handout

  2. Rational number Counting number Whole number integer Real number Complex number

  3. Evaluate the following: • 5 + 5 · 5 ÷ 5 = • 2. 80 – 4(7 – 5) = • 3. 5(3 + 1) – 2(4 – 3) =

  4. To evaluate this expression, we need to use the steps by using the word “PEMDAS”. If there is no parenthesis, we skip to exponent then multiply or divide and then add or subtract.

  5. What happen if a problem is like this: 8 – 6 + 2, or 45 ÷ 9 · 4 There are only subtract and add (divide and multiply), we simply do the problem from left to right. Remember that multiply and divide have the same preference while add and subtract also have the same preference.

  6. Try the following • 4. (7 – 5)³ + 10 • 5. 2(4 – 2)² + 3² · 4 • 6. 4 + 5 ( 3 · 2)² + 4 ÷ 2

  7. Drill 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

  8. 7. • 8. 3(6 + 4)³ + ( 4 – 3)³ 9. 10.
