Crafting the Lesson – Understanding an Argument Persuasive Essay – the writer tries to convince the reader to agree with a certain idea or to take a certain action. **A strong successful argument is based on logic and facts. • Tip #1 Identify the Author’s Purpose The key to understanding any argument is in clearly identifying the author’s position. The author’s position should be an idea that you can state in a simple sentence. • Tip #2 Identify the evidence used to support an argument You must look at the reasons the author uses to prove his or her point. The reason or evidence may be a simple fact or they may be claims that can’t easily be checked. **Your job is to decide how well the evidence supports the argument. • Tip #3 Decide whether the evidence is sound You need to consider each piece of evidence as a link in a chain. • Tip #4 Decide whether the evidence is appropriate to the argument In addition to being logically sound, a piece of evidence has to fit in with the rest of the argument.
