  2. The Dignity for All Students Act:A Presentation for Athletes Cheryl DePierro, Asst. Principal FHS DASA Coordinator

  3. What is DASA? • D.A.S.A. stands for the Dignity for AllStudents Act. It is an act signed into law in 2010 to ensure that all students are free from harassment, bullying and hazing. • Each school has a DASA coordinator. This person is responsible for educating students, faculty and staff about the DASA legislation, as well as, investigating all incidents of harassment, bullying and hazing in order to ensure that all students are treated with dignity. http://www.p12.nysed.gov/dignityact/

  4. What is Bullying? • Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior that involves a power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated over time. • Examples: Teasing, name calling, inappropriate comments, taunting, threats, leaving someone out on purpose, telling other people not to be friends with someone, spreading rumors about someone, embarrassing someone in public, hitting, kicking, pinching, tripping, pushing, taking or breaking someone's things, making mean or rude hand gestures. • www.stopbullying.gov

  5. What is Hazing? • Hazing is the practice of rituals and other activities involving harassment, abuse or humiliation used as a way of initiating a person into a group or ensuring a person remains a member of a group, regardless of the person’s willingness to participate. • www.hazingprevention.org

  6. ComparingBullying & Hazing The same power dynamics & intimidation tactics are involved in both, but … Bullying is about exclusionand Hazing is about inclusion. • www.hazingprevention.org

  7. Hazing in the news! • ESPN’s Hank Nuwer compiled a list of hazing incidents reported by the media from 1980 to 2000. Total Hazing Events = 68 H.S. Level = 48! • www.insidehazing.com

  8. November 2014Hazing Headlines: • Suburban Philadelphia high school football coach loses job amid hazing scandal (11/18/14) • Sayreville Football Players to Be Charged as Juveniles in Hazing Case(11/12/14) • Hazing victim laid to rest as kin cry for justice (11/8/14) • Texas football player charged after locker room incident (11/5/14) • Football Players Suspended after Alleged Hazing Incident(11/5/14) • Manslaughter Conviction in Florida A&M Hazing Case (11/3/14) • Independent investigation launched in Milton football hazing case (11/3/14) • 2 Groton teens plead guilty in football hazing (11/1/14) • Third H.S. cancels end of football season over hazing allegations(11/1/14)

  9. Is Hazing Limited to Athletics? • Since football season was still in full swing in November 2014, many of the headlines in the previous slide involved hazing on football teams, but make no mistake about it. Hazing can occur in any sport or club activity.

  10. Isn’t Hazing just a tradition? • NO! Hazing is NOT a Daler tradition. • Many people MISTAKENLY believe that hazing is a necessary rite of passage and the only way to create strong bonds within agroup. • Often intelligent, moral people haze others, because they assume that they will not "get caught.“ • Sometimes, individuals are expressing their own sadistic feelings and rationalize it by saying, "I have the right and duty to do onto you what was done to me." • This is solidified by the "code of silence" which often exists in groups that haze. • www.insidehazing.com

  11. What is Hazardous about Hazing? • Hazing hurts all those involved: – the hazer, the victim and the bystanders. Physical and emotional pain is endured by all and often extreme guilt and regret for participating in the hazing activities. • Hazing Destroys Solid Reputations: -Your School’s, Your Team’s & Yours

  12. HIDDEN HARM Think you know your BFF inside & out? THINK AGAIN! • We really never know how people will react to being bullied, harassed or hazed. Some people have very strong reactions. This could be a result of HIDDEN HARM. • Hidden Harm is buried pain from trauma experienced earlier in life. When people with Hidden Harm are mistreated again all of those emotions and that pain resurface. The person then responds to all of the injustice they have ever experienced. • Sometimes the way a person responds could be dangerous to themselves or others.

  13. High School Hazing • Please watch the video called “DYING TO BELONG - STUDENT EDITION” which can be found at the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6LKi3YB0X8

  14. How do I report Hazing? HAZING stops with you! If you feel you are being hazed or have witnessed someone being hazed, please tell any responsible FHS adult.

  15. Alternatives to Hazing: The goal of hazing is to bring individuals together as a team. The following activities will do this also: • Mentor younger players together • Organize Intramurals competitions or another athletic event for the community • Participate in Community service projects • Plan Fundraising Events for a charity of your choice • Attend a professional level sporting event together • Plan a pot luck dinner to kick off your season • Make connections with alumnus who also participated in your sport

  16. DALER PRIDE You hear it on the field often from opposing teams & fans: “What’s a Daler?” Show them – on and off the field – exactly what a Daler stands for! DALERS SUPPORT DALERS! Dalers Don’t Haze Dalers!
