  1. Human Biology

  2. Which of theseamazingstatementsabout human biology are fact, and which are fiction? • Thereisfatonthebottom of yourfeet • Yourjawsmove • Newborns are protectedfromdisease

  3. You’reorganized! • You are oneperson, oneorganism. Butthebodyyouhaveismade of billions of individual cells. Thosecells are organized:

  4. Groups of cellswith similar structure and function are calledtissues. • Tissues are organizedintofunctionalunitscalledorgans. • Groups of organsthatworktogether to performspecificfunctionsfortheorganismcompriseorgansystems.

  5. THERE ARE FOUR MAIN TYPES OF TISSUES: • CONNECTIVE TISSUE. Joinstogetherbodystructures, providingprotection and support. It can be hard, soft, orliquid. Examples:

  6. MUSCLE TISSUE. Made of cellsthatcontract in res_ ponse to signalsfromthespinalchord and brain. Allbodymovement, includedthat of internalor_ gans, iscarriedoutbymuscletissue.

  7. EPITHELIAL TISSUE. Tissuethatcoversthebody and itsorgans.

  8. NERVOUS TISSUE. Composed of twotypes of cells, carriesinformationthroughoutthebody. Onetype of cell, called a neuron, conductssignals in the form of electrical impulses. Theothertype of cell, calledglial, supports, protects, and coordinates theneurones.

  9. Basic body plan • Human body has bilateral symmetrywhich can be describedbyfourterms: ANTERIOR (top), POSTERIOR (bottom), VENTRAL (front), and DORSAL (back). • Humanshave a highdegree of CEPHALIZATION, whichmeansthatthesenseorgans and thestructuresthat control thebody are located in its anterior part.

  10. Theinternalorgans are locatedwithinlargespacescalledBODY CAVITIES. Whenthebodygrowsormoves, internalorgans are stablycontainedwithinthebodycavities.

  11. Human bodysystems • Which human bodysystems can youname? • Do youknowtheirspecificfunctions? • Can youtelltheorgansthatmake up those human bodysystems?
