  3. Why take Geogr@phy? We believe that you should take Geography because it helps you: • to understand the environment at local and global scales • to know your world through fieldwork • to make decisions that balance environmental and developmental concerns • to develop a wide range of skills such as presenting arguments or map skills • to use computers and other technology • for analysis / presentation • to understand other cultures in France and throughout the world • to know where places in the world are.

  6. What has changed? The modular approach to learning. Gaining credit as you go along.

Geogr@phy Facts • Geography is the one of the most popular optional GCSE qualifications • Geography links extremely well with specialist science and arts subjects, as well as history so it is ideal for a balanced curriculum • Geography has one of the highest rates of graduate employability, being highly valued by employers

  8. The course covers four main areas: 1. Key Geographical Themes A study of the new and updated Geography key themes including Rivers & Coasts, Population & Settlement, Natural Hazards and Economic Development. • ICT and the use of GIS are encouraged throughout this unit. • 1 ½ hr Examination in June 2013. 50%

  9. 2. Sustainable Decision Making Testing your ability to apply the ideas contained in one of the KGT units. to a scenario pre-released three weeks before the assessment. • 1 hr decision making assessment June 2012. (Year 10) • 25% of total grade.

  10. 3. Geographical Enquiry – Linked in with one of the four key themes. Fieldwork is undertaken at the end of Y10 or beginning of Y11 and involves a fieldtrip to a destination away from Toulouse. 1200 Words,15%. (2012 – Catalonia)

  11. 4. Geographical Investigation – You choose a topic from nine issue-based geographical investigation topics namely; Disease, Trade, Ecosystems, Sport, Fashion, Energy, New Technologies, Crime, Tourism. See next slide….. 800 Words, 10% of total grade.

  12. Choice of one of the titles for investigation. • These titles don’t have any compulsory fieldwork and can be researched using primary data only. • This piece of work is 800 words and completed under controlled assessment conditions. • Work is marked and graded and is worth up to 10% of the total GCSE grade.

  13. How are humans fighting erosion How did this nightclub fall into the sea? What is cultural diffusion? What crime patterns exist in this area? When’s lunch? I’m starving…..!! How are governments aiming to be more sustainable?

  15. Geography can lead on to all sorts. Did you know, Geography graduates are amongst the most employable!!
