Rationale Why Do: Appropriate use of manipulatives for concept and skill practice has been shown consistently to foster learning and aid retention.
Rationale Uses: • When directed in TE as Special Instructional Support (SIS) • Planning and Pacing Guides • When directed in TE as prescription for Reinforce/Reteach • Prescriptive Teaching Boxes located after CM • To address needs of students that would benefit from Acceleration • Students that consistently earn 90% or above on CM, and have met fluency goals • To address needs of students that would benefit from additional practice prior to Content Mastery • Students that consistently score below 80% in any Step • When data analysis from LOLA identifies areas of additional support • Entire class has difficulty with CM in a specific step
Curriculum Resources • LANGUAGE! Words for Teachers CD • Student Text • Interactive Textbook • Content Mastery Book • Sortegories • Avery.com • Click on Find a Template

Walking Through the Process • Determine reason for Folder Activity • Locate in TE, TRG • Identify words/phrases/sentences that will be used • Type works/phrases/sentences onto labels • Create Folder Activity
Folder Activities • Variations/Additional suggestions • Alphabetize It • instructional/challenge gloss margin vocabulary • Word Unscramble • Paragraph Unscramble • Tic-Tac-Toe • Instructional/challenge vocabulary • Answer It – painter questions • Predicate painters • Subject painters • Blueprint for Writing • Sentence Diagramming • Extensions and Accountability • Folders from previous units • Use Sticky Notes instead of index cards
General Principles • Use decodable vocabulary when the emphasis of the activity is to reinforce specific skills or concepts • Bonus words for students that need acceleration • Hold students accountable for work • Include items in sorts that do not fit the sort • Alphabetize It • First sort for correctness, then alphabetize only correctly spelled words • Provide a “Think Space” area for sorts • Students can use this space for words they are uncertain about
