  2. Bellringer • In your NOTEBOOK, write today’s date, then answer the following question. (2pts.)

  3. Reading Workshop • 20-25 minutes • Remember: You must be present and ON TASK during Reading Workshop in order to receive points for reading. That means you are NOT doing homework, sleeping, going to the restroom, going to the library, goofing off, distracting others, etc. • 5 points for every Reading Workshop = 10-15pts. a week. That adds up!

  4. Objectives • Know the definition of allusion and be able to identify its use in various texts. • Create allusion.

  5. Allusion • Allusion-a reference to a mythological, historical or literary person, event or place. It is used to heighten the significance of a poetic image, prose page, or song. • Author’s use it to create the same feeling/mood as the original work, for comedic effect, or to show character’s motives or traits. • NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH “ILLUSIONS”!!!! • Need background knowledge.

  6. Allusion Example Sally had a smile that rivaled that of Mona Lisa. • Since everyone is familiar with the painting, they can imagine what Sally’s smile looks like.

  7. Allusion Example The makers of the Scream movie ALLUDED to Munch’s work of art “The Scream” in order to instill fear.

  8. Allusion Example Stewie’s blocks say REDRUM. This is an ALLUSION to Stephen King’s, The Shining. (REDRUM = MURDER)

  9. Allusion Example Disney’s Hercules ALLUDES to the movie Karate Kid when Hercules is training.

  10. Allusion Example Mine’s a tale that can’t be told, My freedom I hold dear. How many years ago in days of old, when magic filled the air. T’was in the darkest depths of Mordor, I met a girl so fair. But Gollum, the evil one crept up and slipped away with her. Consider the following lyrics from the Rock n’ Roll song “Ramble On” by Led Zeppelin. Are you able to find 2 literary ALLUSIONS in the following lyrics?

  11. Allusion Example Consider the following lyrics from the song “Fire” by The Pointer Sisters. Are you able to find 2 literary ALLUSIONS in the following lyrics? Well, Romeo and Juliet Samson and Delilah Baby you can bet A love they couldn’t deny My words say split But my words they lie ‘Cause when we kiss Ooooh fire

  12. Allusion Example Consider the following lyrics from the song “Juliet” by LMNT. Are you able to find the literary ALLUSIONS in the following lyrics? (Hey Juliet) I think you’re fine You really blow my mind Maybe someday, you and me can run away I just want you to know I wanna be your Romeo Hey Juliet

  13. Allusion Example Consider the following lyrics from the song “Kryptonite” by 3 Doors Down. Are you able to find the literary ALLUSIONS in the following lyrics? If I go crazy then will you still Call me Superman If I’m alive and well, will you be There a-holding my hand I’ll keep you by my side With my superhuman might Kryptonite

Allusion Example For some reason I can’t explain I know Saint Peter won’t call my name Never an honest word But that was when I ruled the world I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing Roman Cavalry choirs are singing Be my mirror, my sword and shield My missionaries in a foreign field Consider the following lyrics from the song “Viva La Vida” by Coldplay. Are you able to find the literary ALLUSIONS in the following lyrics?

  15. Allusion Examples • Examples: • “I was surprised his nose was not growing like Pinocchio’s.” • “I thought the software would be useful, but it was a Trojan Horse.” • “He was a real Romeo with the ladies.” • “Chocolate was her Achilles’ heel.”

  16. Allusion Example • Video: While watching the video, write down what works the movie is alluding to.

  17. Allusion Practice • In your NOTEBOOK, find the allusion in the following sentences and write where they came from and explain what they mean. • 1. He was so angry I expected him to turn green. • 2. The land is run by kids. You might as well call this “Neverland”. • 3. When dad lost his job, mom became a Scrooge, and we never got to buy anything we wanted.
