  1. English Language Arts 9 September 19-20, 2013

  2. Bellringer • In your NOTEBOOKS, write today’s date and answer the following question. • What is the theme of the following passage? Kyle liked Lucy more than any other girl in school, but he had an odd way of showing it. When she walked ahead of him in line, he kicked at her shoe. When she walked ahead of him in line, he kicked at her shoe. When she passed him on the school yard, he called her “lame Lucy.” He even wrote a mean word on her homework during the bus ride to school. But what puzzled Lucy the most was receiving an invitation to Kyle’s birthday party. Figuring that he was just planning a mean trick on her, Lucy decided not to go, and while Kyle eagerly awaited Lucy’s arrival, Lucy talked on the phone to Jacob. When Kyle finally realized that Lucy was not coming to his party, he was crushed.

  3. Reading Workshop • 20-25 minutes • Remember: You need to be reading. Not talking, going to the bathroom, doing homework, goofing off, sleeping, distracting others, etc. You may listen to music as long as it is kept quiet and kept in your pocket. • You receive 5 pts. for being present and on-task during Reading Workshop.

  4. Mini Lesson-Setting • Write the following information in your NOTEBOOK: • SETTING-The time and place in which a story occurs. (Ex: can be specific such as-Oregon Train in the 1800s, or fictitious such as-faraway kingdom or in outer space.) • Most stories have several settings and are constantly changing. • Authors might not tell the reader about the setting. Reader must use clues to infer the time and place. • Ex: How do the characters travel? How do they dress: How do they talk?

  5. Mini Lesson-Setting Write the following information in your NOTEBOOK: • An important element of setting is time. It dictates how characters act, talk, react to each other, or even travel. • Ex: A story that takes place in the South today would be drastically different from a story that takes places in the South in the early 1800s.

  6. Mini Lesson-Setting Write the following information in your NOTEBOOK: • Setting also contributes to the mood of a story. • Ex: the setting of a story about vampires could be an old, dark mansion tucked away in a foggy bayou. (This setting lends an air of suspense and uneasiness to the plot and characters.) If the setting were the busy streets of New York City, there would be a different mood. • Other considerations for the mood of the story are: • Weather conditions • Social conditions • Daily life of character • Localisms-accents, dress, mannerisms, etc. • Mood or atmosphere-how does the mood make the story?

  7. Setting Practice 1 Read the following passage and in your notebook, write down the setting. 1. The automatic doors opened swiftly as Jade strode in. She glanced quickly at the cluster of signs and pressed on down the wide polished corridor. Ahead of her a set of double doors flew open and a trolley, pushed by five concerned faces, passed rapidly by. The smell of antiseptic caught at the back of her throat. Pushing through the doors at the end of the corridor, she emerged into a brightly lit room. Rows of plastic seats groaned with injured people. Where was Manny? The call had been brief. All she knew was that Manny was here somewhere….

  8. Setting Practice 2 Read the following passage and in your notebook, write down the setting. 2. Sadie thrust the ticket into the man’s hand. Half-torn he returned it and pulled open the door. Her eyes narrowed as she stepped forward urgently into the dimly-lit room. Stale popcorn collapsed under her feet. She felt her way down the narrow aisle. She had agreed to meet Gerry somewhere in the middle. The front was too close, whilst the back meant you spent most of your time staring at the hairstyle in front. A young couple stood up to let her pass, their coats fell from their laps and were lost in the dark alley beneath their folding seats.

  9. Eyes Past Print • Once you have finished the writing the notes in your notebook and the practice passages, ask the sub for the story, “Sticks and Stones” by Nicole Ball and the worksheet.

  10. Writing Workshop • Sticks and Stones Worksheet (Handout) • Complete the worksheet over the story. If you do not have it completed by the end of the class period, it will be due when you come in at the beginning of class on Monday. THIS IS FOR A GRADE!!!
