  3. What is agriculture? • Agriculture is the science or art of cultivating the soil, producing crops, raising livestock, and preparing these products for human use.

  4. Production • The making of food, feed, and fiber products for consumers and raw products for industry.

  5. The Scope of Agricultural Production • In the 1930’s a farmer produced enough food to feed 10 people. • Today a farmer produces enough to feed 80 people • 1 hour of agricultural labor today produces sixteen times the food & fiber than it did in the early 1920’s.

  6. The Scope of Agricultural Production • Today 17 cents of every dollar goes towards food • Some countries spend upwards of 60 cents. • Today machines do most of the work on the farm. • In the past all farm work was done by hand.

  8. Questions farmers ask themselves • What crop would best suit my land? • What is the average rainfall my land receives? • What fertilizers should I use? • What pesticides are safe? • Should organic materials be used? • What equipment do I use? • What product is in demand right now?

  9. Various Types of Livestock Produced • Cattle • Sheep/Goats • Swine • Poultry

  10. Questions ranchers ask themselves • What species and breeds will thrive on my land? • What will I need to vaccinate for? • What should I feed for maximum growth? • What are the consumers demanding?

  11. Processing • Processing is the changing of raw products into processed forms for consumers.

  12. The Scope of Agricultural Product Processing • The processing & storage of raw products from production agriculture prior to being marketed. • Jobs include: • Food, feed, & fiber microbiologists, nutritionists, & engineers

  13. Agriculture Marketing • Marketing gets products from the producer to the consumer. Marketing is more than selling a product, it is advertising to enhance purchases by consumers. It also includes transporting the product to places were it can be sold.

The Scope of Agricultural Product Marketing • Includes all business activities required to move a product to a consumer • T.V., Radio, Printed Material, Telephone, Computers • Advertising- a marketing strategy that plays an important role in setting the price for those commodities that are in short supply or appeal to specific consumers • Transportation- Railroads, highways, airlines, & waterways

Research and Development • Hydroponics-growing plants in water solutions without soil. • Xeroponics-growing plants in an environment similar to that found on the moon. • Cloning-creating genetically identical individuals • Aquaculture-the farming of aquatic organisms, including fish, mollusks, crustaceans and aquatic plants

  17. Scope • Scope is the extent, size, or range of something. • The scope of agriculture could be the cattle, poultry, wheat, corn, or any other animal or crop that someone is growing.

  18. Influence of Agriculture on Today’s Society • Agriculture is the largest industry in the United States • Employs approximately 22 million people • The combined agricultural industry accounts for more than $609 billion (more than 20%) of the nation’s total economic production.

  19. Influence of Agriculture on Today’s Society • Today there are more than 1 million agricultural related jobs in the United States • Since the 1950’s the United States has donated over 300 million tons of agricultural products to other countries • That’s a value of over $33 million
