  1. Living with tectonic hazards

  2. Why do people live in danger zones? This lava is weathered (broken down) to form a fertile soil. Can you think of any other reasons? Tourists are attracted to areas of volcanic activity. Geothermal energy can be produced in many volcanic areas.

  3. Geothermal energy • Tectonically active areas are very useful to people • Geothermal energy – volcanic activity below the earth’s surface produces heat. • This heats up water – hot enough for your bath! • Often hot enough to produce steam • The steam can be used to turn turbines in a power station – producing electricity

  4. Your turn • Who lives with tectonic hazards? • In pairs, complete factfiles (1 each) on: • Yellowstone National Park http://www.nps.gov/yell/ • Iceland’s geothermal energy www.or.is • Where are they located What are the tectonic features of both • Why are they successful examples of people living with tectonic hazards?

  5. Plenary • Complete activities 1-3 on page 67
