    1. Welcome to 8th Grade Social Studies! Mrs. Sokolowski August 10, 2011 Curriculum Night

    2. What will we be learning about this year? American Revolution New Nation American Government Arizona Government World War II Cold War Era Civil Rights Movement The Decades **History, Geography, Government, and Economics will be woven together through each unit***

    3. A Typical Day In Social Studies Beginning of Class Ticket In- Warm Up Question over the prior days material Agenda- Write down entire Agenda Interactive Notebook Must have in class at All Times Study Tool Only Contains Social Studies Material End of Class Ticket Out- Reflection Question over the content studied that day

Social Studies Interactive Notebook Students must have in class at all times Only contains Social Studies Material Divided into 4 Sections Section 1 All Items Are in Page Protectors- We use the materials in this section often Social Studies Syllabus Ways of Reading Actively Student Self Assessment Ideas for Interaction with Notes Current Ticket In/Out Paper

Social Studies Interactive Notebook Section 2: Homework All students are required to place their homework in this section before leaving for class This is for ungraded work that needs to be completed at home Section 3: Graded Class Work All graded class work goes in to this section Students are not permitted to throw away papers- we use them to study from Section 4: Notebook Contains the students notebook (1 subject spiral notebook) Students will also place examples and modeled work to use as references

    6. Interactive Notes Interactive Notes require the students to complete an activity with the notes that they have taken in class The Activity is their choice- they pick from a list of 33 Activities Helps students solidify and learn information rather than just reproducing it

    7. Current Events Allows students to take events that are currently happening and compare them to events that were happening in the past 2-3 Articles made Available each week- Students have an opportunity to choose which one they want to do Students complete a Current Events Summary Sheet Introduced on Mondays due on Fridays (or the last day of the week)

    8. Historical Thinking.. Why is that Important??? Historical Thinking is the Act of placing yourself within the time period to determine why events took place, the outcomes that occurred, and why we study History in the first place (Its because its important ?) This is done through class assignments, journaling, questioning Students are able to picture the past rather than see it as an extension of today

    9. Grading A students grade on an assignment/assessment is a reflection over their mastery of the objective being taught You can access student grades 24 hours a day! We encourage students and parents to regularly check grades. If you click on student grade, a list of class assignments will pop up. User names and Passwords were handed out at Meet the Teacher or first day of school. If you do not have a password please check with Ms. Wahl.

    11. Class Website TON of Information! Weekly Agenda Copies of Class work Copies of Notes Ticket In/Out Questions Announcements Extra Credit Check It Out! We encourage students to use class websites often

    12. Extra Credit Is there Extra Credit offered in Social Studies Class? Yes! Students have the opportunity to complete two assignments each week Enrichment- Puzzle over the material that is being studied. Made Available on Monday due on Friday. 5 POINTS History Challenge- Trivia Question made available on Monday and due on Friday. Also available on the class website. 5 POINTS

    13. Research Paper All students will complete a Research Paper during the Second Quarter Paper will be over a topic covered in the 8th Grade Social Studies WWII standards Paper will count for both Language Arts and Social Studies
