  1. Oral Book Report Format 8-10 Minutes Long Make sure you practice timing yourself Use a mirror to practice Eye contact with audience is important

  2. Card # 1 • Title: A girl from Yamhill • Author: Beverly Cleary • Genre: Auto Biography • Number of pages: 279 pages • Other general info on book: It was copy written in 1988.

  3. Card # 2 • The life story of a well known author Beverly Cleary moves to Portland when she is six and starts to write.

  4. Card # 3 • Beverly Cleary is growing up in Yamhill, Oregon. The first world war has ended. Her mother is always giving her rules to follow that she says will turn her into a young lady. The#1 rule her mother told her was to never be afraid. From that day on Beverly was never afraid again. She would do things that no other little kid would do. One tome her mother told her she would take her for a ride in the Naturally the ferries wheel brake down and they were stuck at the top. Beverly discovered that the view was great and she could see everything. She slipped under the bar that was to keep her from falling. The next thing was Beverly was standing on the ferries wheel seat looking at the world beyond her. Her mother tells her to sit back down but she doesn’t because she cant understand why her mother is telling her this. Finally her mother Yanks her down. Eventually they fixed the ferries wheel and they got off right away even though the ride wasn’t over. Beverly still didn’t understand.

  5. Card#4 • Beverly Cleary's grandparents have retired and sold their store. They now own a house in Yamhill close to Beverly. One night after Beverly heard her mom was going to have a baby Beverly was sent over to her grandparents house. She didn’t know why but was very excited. She ended up staying the rest of the next day when her grandmother packed up thanksgiving dinner and waked over to Beverly's house when she came back to Beverly's house for dinner. When Beverly got home she saw her mother lying on the couch downstairs. She had never seen this before when Beverly asked what was wrong she was too little to understand so her mother told her differently. When Beverly was older her mother told her that she had had a miscarriage.

  6. Card#5 • Beverly’s mom id trying to organize a library because there are no books in Yamhill. Eventually they get 204 books from people and other libraries that donated them. Money was very tight back then especially for farmers. So one day Beverly’s father came in the house and said he was done. Then they got their stuff, sold their livestock and moved to Portland, Oregon when Beverly was six years old.

  7. Card# 6 Beverly Cleary is starting school. For the first time she is actually afraid. She is very scared of her first grade teacher but absolutely loves the neighborhood because she gets to roller skate, walk on stilts, and look for bricks and smash them up in a game they call Brick Factory. When she gets to 2nd grade she absolutely loves her teacher and will only read by her. Beverly comes down with a high fever and a soar throat. Her mother is trying desperately to get her reading again. When Beverly gets better she goes back to school and one night becomes so board that she picks up a book her mother got for her and started reading. She was surprised when she enjoyed it. Beverly actually liked reading again.

  8. Card# 7 Beverly Cleary is entering writing contests that she is winning. She entered a contest that she won $2 for but found no one else had even tried. She also got a dollar for writing a letter to the Shopping News that they published.

  9. Card# 8 In the end of my book Beverly Cleary is almost done with high school, has already refused a proposal and is about to graduate. She studied very hard and because of how good her grades were she got to skip her final exams. Finally she graduated and her grandfather gave her $50 so she could get to California for college. Finally she left for college filled with sadness and taking all her memories with her.

  10. Card# 9 • Beverly Cleary is independent, brave, and obedient. She faced challenges like the great depression. She has goals to get money even though it seems impossible because the only thing her mother will let her do is baby sit. I learned to always try and to never give up because if I do I will never know what may have happened. This happened to Beverly Cleary when she was little. There was a contest for the best essay about an animal. Everyone in her class said they were going to enter so Beverly did too. When the day came to find out the results Beverly ran so she could find out very soon. She got there and discovered that she had won! The man gave her $2 and told her she was the only one who had entered. No one else had even tried like they said they would and because Beverly tried she won $2.

  11. Cards 10, 11, and 12 • Personality Trait # 1 • Brave- because she stood up on top of the Ferris wheel seat when they were at the top. She also went upstairs when she was little and saw a ledge outside of the house and climbed out on it and started walking around. • Personality Trait # 2 • Obedient- because she hardly ever disobeys her parents and listens and obeys her mothers rules. • Personality Trait # 3 • Independent- because she wants to get a job where it is just her even though it seems impossible because the only thing her mom will let her do is baby sit. Also because she wants to make her own decisions not the other way around.

  12. Card 13 • Beverly Cleary had goals to get a job where she decided what she got to be even though this seemed like it would never happen. She faced challenges like the great depression. I learned that money was very tight back then especially for farmers. I would not like to live in this time because although they still got to go outside a lot money was very tight and they didn’t have good tecnology.

  13. Card 14 • Author’s Purpose • I think the author wrote this book because she wanted everyone to know how she started to write and how she put parts of her life in her books.

  14. Card # 15 • I liked this book because I have read a lot of Beverly Cleary books and I thought it was interesting how she used parts of her life in her books. She used to take one bite of apple and through the rest away she used this in one of her books. She also made stilts out of 2 lbs. coffee cans and twine also she played a game called brick factory in which she looked for bricks and smashed them up. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes Beverly Cleary and her books
