  1. Greek Pottery Ajax & Achilles, by Exekias, ca. 540-30 B.C.

Pottery in Ancient Greece • Vases were considered mostly functional objects made to be used • They provided multiple purposes: storage, carrying, mixing, serving, drinking etc. • There were some vases which were more ornate considered worthy gifts for dedication to the gods. • Vases which were more decadent often had elaborate art work • These often showcased historic characters and events

Cross Curricular • Since we will be studying Ancient Greece in social studies this is an excellent opportunity to weave art into the curriculum • For their final project in this Unit, students will be working on a famous character from Greek myth. A Greek Vase provides an excellent way to represent their character in an artistic medium.

  4. Materials • The Reality is not every school has access to a Kiln for pottery • That shouldn’t stop you! • For example: My class will be creating vase artwork by using paper • Here is what you will require: • - Images of Greek Vases for inspiration,- Student fact sheets on their Greek Character • -Paper/Scratch Paper • - Acrylic paint • - Skewer • - Brushes • - Pastels

Process • Depending on how complex you decide to go with this type of Artwork the process can vary immensely Example: -Students will draw a vase shape onto a piece of paper -Secondly Students will then colour in their vase -Students will completely cover their artwork in white acrylic paint -Students will etch their designs into the piece and thereby chip away at the white paint strategically revealing the under layer of cover

  6. Considerations • If you will be using paint prepare to put down newspaper in order to prevent unnecessary messes. • Student Desks should be pushed into groups in order to share art supplies and to support collaboration
