  1. Greek Pottery

  2. Greek Pottery • Pottery is more durable than many other art forms therefore it is of great archaeological importance • Has come in many stages the most important and well documented are: the Geometric Period (shown on opening slide), The Black Figure Period, and the Red Figure Period • Started out very geometric in style with little figurative work but later stages became more narrative (story like) and included scenes from everyday life as well as current mythology

  3. Greek Pottery Continued • Most was made on the wheel in several parts and then joined together at the leatherhard stage • Was decorated with colored slips sometimes by the potter and sometimes by other painters • Fired once in a special 3 stage firing which produced the color change • Athens and Corinth were 2 of the most important city states for making pottery • Pottery was used for storage/transport vessels, mixing vessels, jugs/cups, vases for oils/perfumes/cosmetics, and large forms were used as grave markers

  4. Personal thoughts on Greek Pottery • Answer one of the following ?’s or come up with your own ideas how your artwork relates to your life. • Take all the time provided and write at least a half page (you will be sharing these with your neighbor when we’re done) • If you were going to make artwork that included scenes from everyday life, what would it look like? What kinds of ideas, scenes, or mythology do you think future generations will pick up from our time? Who’s your favorite superhero and why? If you could have any super ability what would it be? How would you portray a superhero in your artwork?
