  2. ORIGIN OF MEDICAL TERMS • 75% of medical terms are based on either Greek or Latin words.

  3. A root is the foundation or basic meaning of a medical term. Usually indicates a body part cardi - heart hepat- liver neur - nerve nephr - kidney cyt- cell WORD ROOT

  4. endo - within peri- around / surrounding pro - before mega - large dys- abnormal, painful, difficult The prefix is used at the beginning of a medical term (before the word root) Prefixes describe, modify, or limit the term. PREFIX

  5. A suffix is the word ending that follows the word root and changes its meaning. Often indicates the procedure, condition, disorder, or disease. -itis - inflammation -logy - the study of -ectomy- surgical removal -scopy- process of visually examining SUFFIX

  6. Combining Forms • Combining form consists of the word root and a connecting vowel to make it easier to pronounce and attach another word root or suffix. • Combining form for heart is cardi/o (eg. cardiogram) • Combining form for nerves is neur/o (eg. neurology)

  7. Basic Rules for the Connecting Vowel • The connecting vowel is not used when the suffix begins with a vowel. (neuritis) • The combining vowel is used when the suffix begins with a consonant. (neurology)

  8. Decoding Medical Terms • Define the suffix • Define the prefix • Define the word root • Combine the definitions to decode the medical term or phrase

  9. Cardiology • -logy – suffix means the study of • Cardio - root means heart. • Cardiology - the study of the heart.

  10. Nephritis • -itis – suffix means inflammation • Nephr – word root means kidney • Nephritis means inflammation of the kidney

  12. pericarditis • -itis - suffix meaning inflammation • peri – prefix meaning around • cardi– word root meaning heart • Pericarditis means inflammation around the heart

  13. leukocyte • leuko- prefix meaning white • cyte – word root meaning cell • leukocyte means white cell

  14. hepatitis • -itis – suffix meaning inflammation • hepat – word root meaning liver • hepatitis - means inflammation of the liver

  15. neuropathy • -pathy – suffix meaning disease condition • neuro – word root meaning nerve(s) • neuropathy means a disease pertaining to the nerves
