  2. Early Life • Born at Antiumon on 15 December CE37 • First named LuciusDomitiusAhenobarbus • At age 2 his mother was banished by Caligula and his inheritance was seized • Caligula was later killed and Aggrippa was recalled from exile. • Nero was adopted by Claudius

  3. Rise to Power • At age 14 Nero was appointed proconsul (51 CE) • Claudius died in 54 CE • Nero took over as Emperor at age 16 • Last of the Claudian Dynasty

  4. Impact on Rome • Centralized and defined position of emperor • Made rulings and decisions which benefitted the lower and middle classes • Although these decisions were to build popularity • Wanted to build extravagant buildings • Great Fire of Rome

  5. Major Conflicts • Tried to avoid battle • Parthia • British Revolt (60-61) • Pisonian Conspiracy (65) • First Jewish War (66-70) • Revolt in Judea stemming from Greek and Jewish religious tension

  6. Death of Nero • The Revolt of Vindex and Galba • Committed suicide after fleeing Rome • Fled Rome to escape revolt against tax increases. • Mixed Feelings about his death
