Election of 1968 • Public opposition and a split within the Democratic Party over the war led Lyndon Johnson to withdraw his name from the Democratic President nomination in the election. • During the Convention of 1968, violence erupted in Chicago because of corruption in the Nixon administration.
Vietnamization • Vietnamization strategy for ending US involvement in the gradual withdrawal of US troops and their replaced by Vietnamese forces. • “Peace with honor” • Massive bombing campaign to Laos and Cambodia. • Protests continued with a massive peace march in Washington.

Events to question American values • Napalm: chemical fireball dropped from the sky that was used to kill the vegetation. • Pentagon Papers: documented the history of US involvement in Vietnam. • Revealed the government had drawn up plans for entering the war even as Johnson promised that he would not send troops. • Papers also showed that there was never any plan to end the war as long as the North Vietnamese persisted.
