  1. Fins of Fury • Paper Prototype

  2. Users • Subject 1: Angelus, 26 years old, full time SIAT student, moderate gamer • Subject 2: Betty, 20 years old, full time SIAT student • Subject 3: Sean, 22 years old, full time UBC engineering student, moderate gamer

  3. Setup • Testing was done on campus as well as at home. The game board is a hex grid and contains 4 levels, each representing a life stage of the player. Players must fight to collect points so that they can grow up and move to the next level.

  4. Procedure • All testers were told the premise of the game; a tadpole that develops into a frog on a search and rescue mission • All testers were given a set of written rules • We monitored game-play and represented computer AI by rolling dice and tracking points

  5. What They Liked • All testers enjoyed playing the game and found it reasonably challenging • Had to strategize to avoid fighting the bad guys • Found it straightforward to play • Did not find it too repetitive • Had the urge to destroy all the bad guys and the end boss

  6. What They Didn’t Like • Majority of the testers found the rules overwhelming at the beginning, however quickly picked them up while playing • Some were annoyed by having to physically roll the dice to simulate odds

  7. Suggestions from Testers • Allow fighting against several enemies at once • Have mini bosses at the end of levels and win things for beating them • Add random and pointless things to the game • Add some type of mini-puzzle to the ends of levels • Add weapons and special attacks to battles • Give incentive to kill all enemies in a level

  8. Conclusions • Players want more incentive to proceed than just the end goal of the game; they want frequent rewards and challenges • we should add mini bosses and rewards • Players want lots of variation in the game • they suggested caves to explore and puzzles • Players like weapons .... add weapons

  9. Fins of Fury • Model of the End Boss
