  2. Were They Lived • The traditions of the Ute (Yoot) homelands were around the Colorado Platue. • Their territory included present-day Colorado, Utah, and Northern Arizona. • Most of the time they lived in the west. • They would call themselves Nuciv. (Noo-Chee-oh)

  3. Homes • For many years they lived in Brush Shelters. • Each would hold about 12 people. • They started living in tepees after horses were introduced.

  4. Food • The men would hunt for large animals like Elk, Bison, and Deer. • They would use spears, bows and arrows. • Women would make gardens.

  5. About Ouray • Ouray (OO-ray) was a famous chief. • He was born in 1833. • He and his tribe which was the Ute had to fight to protect their way of life and land. • Ouray saw how other tribes where mistreated. • He became the leader who lead the Ute through the Hard times.
