  2. Handicrafts of India  • Indian handicrafts are diverse and influenced by religions, regions, castes, cults and popularly with different empires. History preaches, impact of ruling elite and common people had diversified the crafts structure and sculpture according to the passes of time. History is inexplicably defining the arise of handicrafts from the beginning of indus valley civilization to the era of 21st century The IVC touched the peaks in ancient times, along with its contemporaries mesopatamia and ancient Egypt.

History of Handicrafts • The indus valley civilization lasted from 3300 b.c.e. to 1300 c.e. of indus valley civilization had flourished with harrappa & mohenjodaro cultures, rich in crafts and glorified history. The cultures invented ancient art & pottery, usage of gold, silver and bronze, sculptures, seal carving with different metals, beads, bangles etc. It is also noted for its urban planning, baked brick buildings and water supply systems, although archeologists have yet to find evidence of any monumental architecture, such as palaces or temples. IVC flourished in particular, along the banks of Indus River and its tributaries, extending to more than 1,056 cities and settlements with a total population of over five million. The cultures and the crafts were also influenced from Persian and greek art & craft. One of the culture is;

The harappan civilization categorized into three phases- • Early Harappan phase (3500 BC-2600 BC) – It draws the town-planning in the form of mud structures, elementary trade, arts and crafts, etc.\ • Mature Harappan phase (2600 BC-1900 BC) – It depicts developed towns with the burnt brick structures, inland and foreign trade, crafts of various types, etc.  • Late Harappan phase (1900 BC-1400 BC) – The late phase of decline during which many cities were abandoned and the gradual decay of the urbanization.

  5. Metal work and craftsmanship • Harappan craftsman developed most evident techniques of gold smiting and bronze sculptures, used in metalwork (bronze, copper) and jewelry.

  6. Sculptures • IVC is better known for the bronze sculpture figurine, the most famous ‘Dancing Girl of Mohenzodaro’ were also excavated from there. Except from bronze, stone-sculptures of red stone, terracotta stone were also used. Not only dancing girl figurine but also animal sculptures like cow, monkey, horse etc. were also found.

  7. Seals & Symbols • Written symbols, imprints of animals like horse, unicorn, cow etc. on seals, clay pot, non-linguistic signs, ceramic pots, Egyptian and Sumerian culture’s writing influence and symbols were also found. • All over history speaks, the growth of craft with growing needs, inventions, human societies, cultures, and influence of rulers and visiting civilizations.
