How did it happen? • The causes of the Great Depression in the early 20th Century are a matter of active debate among economists, and are part of the larger debate about economic crises, although the popular belief is that the Great Depression was caused by the 1929 crash of the stock market. The specific economic events that took place during the Great Depression have been studied thoroughly: a deflation in asset and commodity prices, dramatic drops in demand and credit, and disruption of trade, ultimately resulting in widespread unemployment and hence poverty. However, historians lack consensus in determining the causal relationship between various events and the government economic policy in causing or ameliorating the Depression.

  7. Reading (Fake, but Real) Primary Sources • Using the accompanying documents read and organize the documents. • Look for relevant information and correspond on handout 2.2 • Be sure to read carefully

Assessment • You work for the Pequannock Herald • 1st create a one page newspaper article detailing what were the causes of the Great Depression. • 2nd Create a poem which reflect the feeling of the Great Depression, and what life was like • 3rd Find the lyrics to a song during the 1930’s which reflect the time periods Great Depression. Write an OP ED on what the theme is and how it is related • 4th Write a letter to the editor expressing your concerns over the economy or an economic problem, ask for recommendations • 5th Create a APPROPRIATE Comic strip, political cartoon, or illustration you may find in a newspaper during the Great Depression.
