  2. Objectives • Incorporate ethics/bioethics discussions into mainstream ChE curriculum • Target audience: • undergraduate and graduate students in Chemical Engineering • graduate students working in the biotechnology area

  3. Proposed Curriculum Structure • Required ethics discussions in • Sophomore seminar class (ChE 202x) • Junior level seminar class (ChE 302) • Graduate seminar class (ChE 601) • Bioethics component in graduate level biomaterials elective class • Biorenewables laboratory classes • Use case studies after introducing basics of ethical theory and code of ethics

  4. What works.. • Case studies - not black and white • Current topics, motivate discussions • Grade ethics component • Initiate discussions in class - lay ground rules - no personal attacks • Use resources provided by Bioethics Institutes, professional societies • Role playing • Questions designed to lead gradually down a logical path

  5. And what does not.. • Case study discussions: • Personal attacks • Ridiculing other people’s ideas • Refusing to see other points of view • People who think these discussions are a waste of time
