  1. Shifts in Common Core for Math across the Grades Presented by: Cindy Weinrich

  2. Common Core has some MAJOR Shifts in Mathematics:They concentrate or focus on these three “big ideas.” 1. Learn more about fewer, key topics2. Build skills within and across grades3. Develop speed and accuracy

  3. Mathematics Shift 1:Focus: Learn more about less Students must……. Teachers must…… Know what the “priority work” is for your grade level. Spend time reinforcing “priority work.” Monitor student progress throughout the year with “priority work.” “Priority work” equates to the CCSS for your grade level. • Spend more time on fewer concepts www.engageNY.org

  4. Mathematics Shift 2:Skills Across Grades Students must……. Teachers must……. Be aware of where student struggles are from prior years and how that will impact this years curriculum Ensure that support is given for “gap” skills that have been identified through summative and formative assessments • Keep building on year after year

  5. Mathematics Shift 3:Speed and Accuracy Students must……. Teachers must…… Be aware of the fluency requirements for your grade level. Provide daily opportunities to practice these fluencies Involve students and families in the importance of students knowing or memorizing math facts • Spend time practicing math facts • Parents need to be involved in this process too.

  6. PARCC and the Common Core State Standards for Fact Fluency PARCC= Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers

  7. What is Fact Fluency? “Fact fluency means fast and accurate. To be fluent is to flow; fluent isn’t halting or stumbling or reversing oneself.” “The key aspect of fluency is that it is not something that happens all at once in a single grade level, but requires attention to student understanding along the way.” “For example, fluency with single digit addition (2.OA.2) is a major progression of learning stretching back in the standards to kindergarten.“ From p. 5 PARCC Draft Model Content Frameworks for Mathematics

  8. Mathematics Shift 4:Know it and Do it Students must……. Teachers must……. Make sure assessments really assess if students knows why the answer is what it is Be sure to model why the math works and how it can be proved Make sure lessons and assignments provide opportunities to write in math Provide the TIME for your students to understand, talk and prove why the math works. • UNDERSTAND why the math works • MAKE the math work • TALK about or EXPLAIN why the math works. • PROVE or JUSTIFY why and how the math works

  9. Mathematics Shift 5:Real World Students must…… Teachers must…… Provide opportunities for students to see math in daily life Model solving real world problems throughout the school day Provide high interest real world problems for students to solve Give students lots of opportunities to practice • Apply math in REAL WORLD situations • Know which math to use for which situation

  10. Mathematics Shift 6:Think Fast/Solve Problems Students must…… Teachers must…… Use summative and formative assessments to see where your students are in this learning process Provide skill specific activities based on data obtained from above assessments for the students that need it, i.e. data driven instruction Make sure students are always thinking about HOW math is used in the real world. • Be able to use core math facts fast AND • Be able to apply math in the real world

  11. Math in the new common core requires that students: a. Really know it, b. Really do itc. Use it in the real world ANDd.Be able to think fast and solve problems.

  12. In this question, students only need to find the answer.

  13. With this question, students need to find the answer by going thru multiple steps and then explain their thinking.

  14. This question and answer requires that students know the math, do the math, and apply or use it in the real world quickly.

  15. Math in the new common core requires that teachers:a. Use the standards to make teaching content decisions, b. Understand and teach the standardsc. Apply the standards and use them in the real world settingsd. Think, model, explain and solve problems using the standardse. Use formative and summative assessments and data driven instruction to make sure their students can do all of the above.
