Partnership between Northern Grampians Shire Council and Monash University Architecture School Japanese architect and Monash artist-in-residence Hiroshi Nakao 21 students/5 weeks – community immersion Flood mitigation project – design and construction Multiple funding sources Utilizing Council engineering and local community expertise #1 Partnership Approach

Targeting identified skill shortages – planning, engineering, accounting, IT Regional focus – West Wimmera, Hindmarsh, Northern Grampians, Yarriambiack, Horsham municipalities Engagement with universities variable Expressions of Interest from 60 students and 20 businesses 20 student placements between November and February Local Government, local businesses, regional agencies Student immersion in workplace and community #2 Internship Approach

Project Outcomes Students • Practical work experience in regional environment • Appreciation of career opportunities in a regional community • Possible credit to course work • Supported accommodation and travel solved logistical issues Business/supervisor • New skills / new technical information in organisation • Contributing to greater regional development • Acknowledgement of students’ skills • Businesses encouraged community /social interaction • All businesses would participate again Regional • Changed perceptions for students about work opportunities in regional Victoria, particularly in skill shortage areas • Shared accommodation builds on community interaction • Work placements do translate to employment
