Vocab. – Chapters 1-2 • Perpetual – continuing or enduring forever • Inept – without skill or aptitude for a particular task • Charismatic – characteristic capable of influencing or inspiring large numbers of people • Naïve – having or showing lack of experience, judgment or information • Lackadaisical – without interest, listless, lethargic • Atrocities – acts of extreme cruelty • Emaciated – abnormally lean or thin by gradually wasting away of flesh • Permeated - to pass through every part of • Quintessential – the most perfect embodiment of something

  2. Vocab. – Chapters 3-4 • Facetiously – not meant to be taken seriously or literally • Regime – a government in power • Inexplicable – incapable of being accounted for or explained

  3. Vocab. – Chapters 5-8 • Incessant (5)- ceaseless, unending • Astute (7) – clever, cunning, ingenious • Appeased (7) – to bring to a state of peace, quiet, calm • Allegiance (8) – the loyalty of a citizen to his or her government

Chapters 9 and 10 • Glibly – thoughtlessly fluent • Ecstatic – characterized by ecstasy • Skeptically – showing doubt • Indoctrinate – to instruct in a principle or ideology • Cult – a group bound by sacred ideology • Tremor – involuntary shaking of the body or limbs • Tizzy – a nervous, excited state

Chapter 16 and 17 • Brigade - a group of individuals organized for a particular purpose • Ironically – characterized by mockery • Idealistic – belief in things in their ideal form, rather than as they are • Usurp – to seize and hold by force or without legal right • Somber – gloomily dark, depressing
