Sheet metal forming process is carried out in the plane of the sheet by tensile forces with a high ratio of surface area to thickness. The high rate of production and formability is determined by its mechanical properties. Sheet metal components distributor use mechanical and hydraulic presses in manufacturing the sheet components. For more information visit:http://www.harsunenggworks.in/blog/sheet-metal-forming-process-and-their-application/

Sheet Metal Forming Process and Their Application Forming involves a wide range of processes that manufacture metal parts for various purposes. Sheet metal refers to a metal that has high surface area to volume ratio. The process for creating sheet metal components involve deforming the sheet without breaking, cutting, removing or tearing any part of the sheet. Some of the sheet metal components distributors in Mohali also manufacture the components. Forming of sheet metal depends on the manufactured component and the manufacturing process. Different types of sheet metal forming processes, their applications and characteristics are as follows: Source: - http://www.harsunenggworks.in/blog/sheet-metal-forming-process-and-their-application/
∑ Roll Forming It is a type of rolling which involves continuous bending of the long strip of sheet metal into the desired form. The strip is passed through sets of rollers, each set performing an incremental part of the bend until the desired profile is obtained. Its application and characteristics include production of a well-finished component. It is suitable for mass production, long sheet metal parts; the production cost is low while the tooling cost is high. ∑ Deep Drawing It is a process in which a sheet metal plank is radically drawn into a forming die. It is a shape transformation process with material preservation. The process is considered deep drawing when the depth of the drawn part is more than its diameter. This is achieved by redrawing the part through series of dies. It is suitable for mass production, the shallow components like sheet metal caps and cups can be manufactured via this process. The overall production cost is low and the tooling cost is heavy. ∑ Stamping It is the process of placing flat sheet metals in either coil or blank form into a stamping process where the tool and die surface forms the metal into net shape. It includes a variety of operations such as punching, embossing, bending, flanging, coining, and blanking. The process could be a single stage operation or occur through series of stages. The applications & characteristics of stamping process make it suitable for mass production, the cost of production is less but the tooling cost is higher. ∑ Stretch Forming It is a metal forming process in which a piece of sheet is stretched and bent simultaneously over a die in order to form large contoured parts. The process is performed on a stretch press, in which a piece of sheet metal is securely gripped by gripping jaws along the edges. The varied application and characteristics make it apt for large sheet metal components like door panels, aircraft fuselage, etc. It has a low production rate, is appropriate for large bending radius but the cost of laboris high. ∑ Spinning It is used to make tubular parts by fixing a piece of sheet to a rotating form. Rollers or rigid tools press the stock against the form, stretching is done until the stock takes the shape of the form. It finds application in manufacturing rocket motor castings, satellite dishes, metal kitchen Source: - http://www.harsunenggworks.in/blog/sheet-metal-forming-process-and-their-application/
funnels and missile nose cones. The tooling cost is low but the production cost is high, the product formed has good finished surface. There are many different metals that can be made into sheet metal components such as brass, aluminum, copper, steel, nickel, tin and titanium. Sheet metal is used for airplane wings, car bodies, roofing and many other applications. Sheet metals also have many decorative uses as well. Did you find this relevant? Leave a comment below.
