  10. Data modelling

  11. Data modelling event tier category speaker timeline item timeline

  12. Data modelling

  13. Data modelling: types of tiers • Type T(ranscription): primary tier for orthographic/phonetic description of the verbal part in the interaction • Type A(nnotation): tier(s) with analytic descriptions of the transcription, e.g. prosodic tier, translation etc.  relation to T-tier • Type D(escription): tiers for the description of additional aspects of the interaction, typically: nonverbal information (gestures, facial expression)

  14. Data modelling: types of tiers Transcription Description Annotation

  15. Segmentation • Devide transcription into words, pauses, nonverbal parts, utterance etc. • Imporant for analysis, quantifying etc. • Wortlisten, MLU, … • Automatized using functions of Partitur-Editor and EXAKT • Optional • Depending on the convention of transcription • Supported conventions: • HIAT, GAT, cGAT-Minimal, CHAT, DIDA, „Generic“ • Violation of convention = segmenting error

  16. Segmentation

  17. Segmentation Segment chains = coherent chains of events within a transcription tier = white passages between the grey ones

  18. Segmentation DS: Okay. Très bien, très bien. FB: Alors ça dépend ((coughs)) un petit peu. HIAT • Utterances end with end mark (full stop, question tag etc.) • string/enumeration with a comma • Nonverbal information in (round) double brackets

  19. Meta data • Recordings and transcriptions describe the verbal event as such • Metadata describes the circumstances under which the event takes place and is documented • Metadata for: • Documentation / Organisation • Analysis

  20. Meta data • … communication related • Place and time • Background • Communication type • … speaker related • Age • Sex • Languages • Information on pronouncation • … recording related • Recording equipment • Recording person • … transcription related • Transcribing person • Transcription supervisor

  21. Meta data modelling („framework“)

  22. Meta data modelling • Main components • List of communications • … with corresponding recordings • … with corresponging transcriptions • List of speakers • Description for each component • Open attribute-value pairs (Description) • Some preset data sets (Language, Location)

  23. Linking of transcription and meta data Transcription data Meta data
