  1. Basics • Youtube is a video-sharing website. • The company is based in San Bruno, California. • Youtube operates as a subsidiary of Google. • It‘s the third most visited Website on the Internet.

  2. History • Founded by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim. • The domain name www.youtube.com was activated on February 14,2005. • Youtube began as a venture-funded technology startup.

  3. The name Youtube led to problems for a similarly named website Utube. • In October 2006, Google Inc. acquired Youtube for $1.65 billion in Google stock. • In November 2008, Youtube reached an agreement with MGM, Lions Gate Entertainment and CBS, allowing all companies to post full-length films and episodes on the side accompanied by advertisements. This lead to a competition with Fox and Disney.

  4. Uploading • All Youtube users can upload videos up to 15 minutes in duration. • Users who have a good track record of complying with the website‘s Community Guidelines, may be offered the ability to upload videos of unlimited lenght. • File size is limited to 2 GB.

  5. Censorship • Youtube has been blocked in China. • Morocco shut down access to Youtube in 2008. • Also Thailand, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan and Lybia blocked access to Youtube.

  6. Social impact • The first video was entitled „Me at the zoo,“ and shows founder Jawed Karim at San Diego Zoo. • The social impact of Youtube was the success of „The Bus Uncle.“ It was discussed widely in the mainstream media. • Guitar is a video, which features a performance of Pachebel‘s Canon on an electric guitar. Since Nytimes revealed the identity of the guitarist it has been removed.

  7. April Fools • In 2008 all the links to videos on the main page were rediricted to Rick Astley‘s music video „Never Gonna Give You Up.“ (Rickrolling) • In the 2009 clicking on a video on the page turned the page upside down.
