  5. All Issues boil down to 3 things: • BLAME • VALUES • CHOICES* • * most effective

  6. Who took my pencil? BLAME

  7. Is cheating wrong? VALUES

  8. Should Mr. Sell give more writing assignments? CHOICE

  9. Should Lebron James have gone to Miami to chase rings? VALUES

  10. Should we dance like crazy people? CHOICE

  11. Why is this important? • You will never meet your goals if you argue around the wrong issue. • SHE: Can you turn that down a little? • HE: You’re the one who set the volume last. • SHE: Oh, really? Then who was it blasting “In Da Club” all over the place this afternoon? • HE: So that’s what this is about. You hate my music.

  12. BLAME = PastVALUES=PresentCHOICE= Future

  13. The rhetoric of the Past deals with JUSTICE. (also called forensics)

  14. The rhetoric of the present deals with people bonding. • We decide who belongs to our tribe. • Rhetoric tends to finish with people bonding or separating. • SHE: What movie did you have in mind? • HE: We haven’t seen Titanic in ages. • SHE: Titanic? I hate that movie.

  15. Rhetorical Trick: Propose an extreme choice first. • HE: How about Henry for a name? • SHE: Ugh. • HE: How about Kallandro for a name? • SHE: No! • HE: Mystique? • SHE: Are you serious? • HE: How about Henry? • SHE: Fine.

  16. The Rhetoric of the Future promises a pay-off. • FATHER: Who used all the toothpaste? • SON: That’s not the question, is it, Dad? The question is, how are we going to keep it from happening again? • Can you bring it into the present?

  17. Try this one…using future tense. • We shouldn’t let kids play on those monkey bars. They could break their necks. • On the other hand…

  18. MARGE: Homer, I don’t want you driving around in a car you built yourself.HOMER: You can sit there complaining, or you can knit me some seat belts. • How does Homer use tense?

  19. FIRST RULE OF ARGUMENT:NEVER DEBATE THE UNDEBATABLE.

  20. NED FLANDERS: You ugly, hate-filled man.MOE: Hey, I may be ugly, and I may be hate-filled, but…uh…what was the last thing you said? • How does Moe fail here?

  21. To review • CONTROL THE ISSUE • Do you want to fix blame? • Define who meets or abuses your common values? • Or get your audience to make a choice? • CONTROL THE CLOCK • Make sure your argument is in the right TENSE.
