CE 480 30 August 2011 • Last week: • why you are studying ethics in this class – we want this to be the best 1 unit class you • have at WSU • fundamental canons for the engineering profession • hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public • work only in your area of competence • your public statements are objective and truthful • you are a faithful agent for your employer and clients • went over syllabus – any questions? • NSPE Code of Ethics – you all read it !!!!!! – provides a frame of reference for ethical • judgment and spells out the ways in which moral and ethical principles apply to • professional practice • today – pass in a sheet with your team names (or your name if you have not formed a • team) and list the top 3 choices of case studies for oral presentation • Challenger case study by GHM 6 and 13 September – read the synopsis on the website • first essay due on 20 September on one of presentations 1-4

  2. video today • engineers work with technology • engineers are trained to identify and assess alternatives • nearly all engineers are employees, so making the “right” decision can cost you your job • as you watch the video • look for the ethical issues • how do those issues interact with other considerations • how is the problem solved • is this the only solution • for the video, the NSPE Code says: • tell the truth • protect the public • be a loyal employee • ethical obligations are sometimes in conflict with organizational and personal goals

  3. tell the truth: • engineers shall be objective and truthful in professional reports, statements and testimony • engineers shall include all relevant and pertinent information • is the engineer in a different position than the land developer because he is an engineer?? • protect the public • engineers shall hold paramount the health, safety and welfare of the public • the head engineer asks this, but his answer is narrow • be a loyal employee • engineers shall act in professional matters for each employer or client as faithful agents • obligations to employer and public are sometimes in conflict • going to higher management bypassing the management structure – is this a form of • disloyalty • Do you agree that Duffy/PorterRodman should be excused from meetings its obligation to • report the additional wells?
