  2. Why Communities of Practice? • Rationale: UNDP has branded itself as a knowledge organization – corporate mandate • Practical reason: Enhancing the capacity of members of the CoP to work together and address common issues – learn from the experience of others

  3. Bratislava’s role in CoP development Facilitating Communities of Practice in cooperation with the members In the ECIS region CoPs parallel the corporate service lines represented in Bratislava Regional Centre

Democratic Governance CoPs What has been done so far? • Local Governance and Decentralization Sub-regional action plans based on member surveys, website, workshop on accessing EU funds etc. • Human Rights and Justice Works with a network of Ombudsman institutions in the region, website, upcoming training on human-rights-based approach to development programming. • ICTD Focal points have started to work together. • Public Administration Reform and Anti-Corruption A priority area for UNDP in the region. The work on setting up a PAR-AC CoP was initiated in late 2004 with a members’ survey.

  7. What has been done so far? OTHERS • HIV/AIDS– Has received much interest from COs, produced a how-to guide on building local partnerships to address HIV/AIDS • Gender – An active group of focal points has been working together for over 2 years • Energy and Environment – will start a CoP this year • Public Private Partnerships • Small and Medium Sized Enterprises • Civic Engagement
