Banff In focus • Banff National Park first NP in Canada, est. 1885 • Hot springs found by three Canadian Pacific Railway employees in 1883 • 6641 square km in size, protected wilderness • Banff Springs Hotel built by the CPR in 1887 • Banff has developed as a resort community with the hotel as a major tourist destination in Canada • Banff population 8300 permanent residents, increases during tourist months • 3 ski resorts in area, mountain biking, hiking, hot springs, shopping

Sustainability in the tourism industry • Most tourists partake in mass tourism which has many impacts on the local residents and environment. • Consider this question: • “Can mass tourism truly be responsible, green and eco-conscious?” • Read the article “Cheap Pinas” and, as a group, create 3 arguments to support a “YES” response and 3 for “NO” based on today’s lesson.
