This demo features Special Needs Assessment Profile (SNAP-SpLD) for specific learning difficulties 5–14 developed by Charles Weedon and Gavin Reid and Special Needs Assessment Profile-Behaviour (SNAP-B) for social, emotional and behavioural difficulties 5–16 developed by Rob Long and Charles Weedon

  3. Computer-aided diagnostic assessment and profiling – for use by all special needs and learning support staff! SNAPdraws information from home and school. Carefully-targeted questionnaires identify clusters and patterns of difficulties or behaviours, yielding a graphic profile which highlights core problem areas. For each problem area,SNAPthen generates fully personalised information sheets giving down-to-earth, practical advice and strategies for more focused and effective support, at school and at home. EachSNAPprogram is purpose-designed for use by SENCOs, learning support and specialist teachers in primary and secondary schools, SEN support services, and other special needs professionals. No specific training is required.

SNAP involves clear steps, using the CD-ROM in conjunction with the User’s Handbook and Pupil Assessment Pack, available separately: • class teacher(s) and parents complete the structured questionnaires in the Pupil Assessment Pack, giving an initial 'outline map' of the pupil's difficulties; • the parent and teacher responses are collated onto the CD-ROM; • a computer-generated SNAP profile gives a graphic overview of the pupil’s difficulties; • for each problem area, you can then generate personalised information sheets giving practical suggestions for support in school and at home. • The infosheets generated from the SNAP profile are Word documents which you can edit, merge and expand as you feel appropriate.

SNAP Together combines the award-winning SNAP-SpLD and SNAP-B programs, bringing clearer insights to both specific learning difficulties and social, emotional and behavioural difficulties – ideal for pupils with multiple difficulties. • SNAP Together is comprehensive, structured and systematic: it maps each pupil's own mix of problems onto an overall matrix of learning and/or social and personal difficulties. • SNAP Together helps you to identify clusters of problems and the core features of a pupil's difficulties. • SNAP Together points the way to the most appropriate teaching and/or specialist provision. • SNAP Together will help you to strengthen home and teacher support. • SNAP Together will help you monitor progress and evaluate the effectiveness of any intervention. • SNAP Together provides a shared database plus an Overview screen to help you keep track of your SNAP assessments and ensure they are kept up to date.

What is SNAP-SpLD – and why do I need it? • SNAP-SpLD gives a diagnostic profile across 22 specific learning difficulties and conditions – from ADD to visual processing and working memory difficulties (see full list on next screen). • The SNAP-SpLD profile provides ‘core’ and ‘expanded’ views across all 22 SpLDs – plus self-esteem – to pinpoint problem areas. • You can superimpose and compare any two previous SNAP-SpLD profiles, enabling you to review a pupil’s progress. • You can also see at a glance where responses to individual questions have changed – for better or worse – in successive assessments. • The information sheets generated for each SpLD can be ‘age-linked’ for primary and secondary pupils. • A ‘confidence indicator’ alerts you if there is a high proportion of ‘don’t know’ responses or skipped questions in the questionnaires.

What is SNAP–Behaviour – and why do I need it?continued • You can superimpose and compare any two previous SNAP–B profiles, enabling you to review a pupil’s progress. • Using the matrix, you can also see at a glance where responses to individual questions have changed – for better or worse – in successive assessments. • The personalised helpsheets suggest a wide range of support strategies, with an emphasis on restorative approaches where appropriate. • The helpsheets also include progress checklists linked to specific SEAL outcomes in each problem area, and can be ‘age-linked’ for primary and secondary pupils. • A ‘confidence indicator’ alerts you if there is a high proportion of incomplete questionnaire responses.

  19. How do I use SNAP–Behaviour? SNAP–Behaviour involves three clear steps, using the CD-ROM in conjunction with the Pupil Assessment Pack questionnaires, available separately: STEP 1 (Pupil Assessment Pack): structured questionnaire checklists for completion by class teacher(s), parents and pupil give an initial 'outline map' of the child's difficulties. STEP 2 (CD-ROM) – the core part of the package: collate the questionnaire responses onto the CD-ROM, to create a graphic profile of the child’s social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. STEP 3 (CD-ROM): click on the computer-generated profile to generate fully personalised support strategies and practical follow-up, for class teachers and parents.

  20. Which SNAP do I need? • You choose whether you want just SNAP-SpLD, just SNAP-B, or both (SNAP Together). All three options are available in single-user versions – ideal for peripatetic as well as in-school use, especially in smaller schools. • If you want to run SNAP across a network – making the full package available to all special needs and support staff in a larger or split-site school – the SNAP Together network version is for you. The user-friendly SNAP packages are designed for use by all special needs and learning support staff, and offer you maximum flexibility:

  21. The SNAP Together ‘pupil’ screen brings together and gives easy access to all of your SNAP data – ideal for those pupils who have multiple difficulties.

  22.  Clicking on the larger dots brings up a ‘thumbnail’ of the relevant SNAP profile (not available on this Powerpoint demo). (If you have previously used SNAP-SpLD and/or SNAP–B on the same computer, all your existing data can be imported into SNAP Together.) The SNAP Together ‘Overview’ shows the intervals (ages) at which a pupil has been assessed, at school and at home, using each of the SNAP-SpLD and SNAP-B questionnaires – helping to ensure that reviews are kept up to date.

  25. SNAP – single-user versionsThe SNAP single-user programs are designed for use on a single PC: the licence also allows installation on a laptop for use by peripatetic teachers. Your data can be held on a network drive (e.g. for automatic back-up) if required. Each SNAP program is a 32-bit Windows® application that requires the .NET framework 2.0 (or later) to be installed on your PC in order to run: this will be checked during installation and you will be prompted to install it if necessary. To run the framework and application, you require a PC running Windows® XP, Vista™ or Windows 7 with a 1.5GHz or faster processor, with at least 512 Mb of memory (1 Gb of RAM recommended for Vista or Windows 7) and approximately 200 Mb of disk space to install the program (and an extra 150Mb if you need to install the .NET framework) and 100 Mb to run it. For quicker results you will need a PC with a faster CPU and more RAM. You will also need a mouse and SVGA monitor, set to a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 or higher. Note: as the number of data stored increases, the required disk space will also grow.

SNAP Together – network versionSNAP Together network version is designed to run over a school network, giving special needs and learning support staff across the whole school immediate access to the SNAP resources they need. This program is a 32-bit Windows® application that requires the .NET framework 2.0 (or later) to be installed on your PC in order to run: this will be checked during installation and you will be prompted to install it if necessary. To run the framework and application, you require a PC running Windows® Server 2003, XP, Vista™ or Windows 7 with a 1.5 GHz or faster processor, with at least 512 Mb of memory (1 Gb of RAM recommended for Vista or Windows 7) and approximately 200 Mb of disk space to install the program (and an extra 150Mb if you need to install the .NET framework) and 100 Mb to run it. For quicker results you will need a PC with a faster CPU and more RAM. If you are working through a server, this may have an additional effect on the perceived speed.
