  2. Project Description • Perform front-end engineering design of 2unit operation in biodiesel or insulin production process • Design must be feasible – consult real companies and try to get real quotes • Report must be detailed and professional

Project 1: Insulin Production • Production of purified biosynthetic human insulin (BHI) using transformed E. coli cellsand a capacity of around 1,800 kg of BHI per year. • Insulinis a peptide hormoneproduced by the beta cells of the pancreas. • Its main function is to stimulate liver, skeletal muscle and fat tissue to uptake glucose from the bloodstream. • It binds to insulin receptors that regulate the production of cell membrane protein that transport glucose into the cell. • It is used in the treatment of diabetes, particularly type 1 where patients’ own beta cells cannot produce insulin. Project 2: BiodieselProduction • There are three dominant ways of biodiesel production. • Most of the biodiesel produced today is done with the base catalyzed reaction for several reasons: • It requires low temperature and pressure. • It yields high conversion (98%) with minimal side reactions and reaction time. • It is a direct conversion to biodiesel with no intermediate compounds. • Your design project analyzes the production of 33,635 metric tons (MT) per year of biodiesel using crude degummed soy bean oil Process description • Reaction Section • Biodiesel Refining Section • Glycerol Purification Section

  5. A word about SuperPro • Unit operations are controlled mainly by user-specified input • Not a thermodynamics modeling package like Aspen HYSYS

  6. What should SuperPro be used for? • Getting an idea of the overall process • Determining inlet and outlet flows and compositions • Scheduling information • SuperPro does not tell you the logistics of running a batch process

  9. Report Components • 4 page maximum (excluding cover page, executive summary, tables of contents, and appendices) • Times font, size 12, 1.5 line spacing • Submit online by 16:00 on April 2nd, 2013

  10. Executive Summary • Summary of main conclusions (like an abstract) • Written for a business audience • Less technical content • Focus on business/economic aspect • Sell your design • Maximum 1 page • Write it last

  11. Introduction • Describe the purpose of your report • What does the unit do? • Discuss inputs and outputs • How does it fit into the overall process? • Why is it needed? • Why is it at the given point in the sequence of operations?

Discussion • Sizing (capacity & dimensions), materials of construction, configuration • Use the specified flow rates & compositions • Find real suppliers and get quotes; work within limits of what is commercially available • Utility requirements • Safety aspects (backups, emergency shutoff, spills, etc.) • Environmental concerns (i.e. handling of waste) • Cleaning & maintenance issues • Manpower requirements (i.e. manual vs. automatic operation)

Discussion (continued) • Importance of unit within overall process • Scheduling of batch processes • Consequences of unit shutdown/malfunction • Comment on robustness, i.e. note the consequences of: • Varying inlet conditions • Changing operating parameters • Note inefficiencies/limitations • Consider alternatives • Justify your design decisions

Conclusion & Recommendations • Do not just restate the executive summary • Can be more technical than ES • Draw together main points about the design and the conclusions that were made in each section (i.e. utilities, safety, environment, capital and operating costs, etc.) • Provide recommendations

  15. Writing Guidelines

  16. Main Report • Each section should have a clear introduction, discussion, and conclusion • Technical description is not enough – explain rationale behind design decisions • Equipment quotes should be in an appendix and referenced in the main report • Consistent style, format, professional tone • Know the difference between their and there; affect and effect; etc.

Figures, Tables, & Appendices • Captions should be concise but descriptive enough to understand figure or table without having to read report • Use consist style for figures and tables • Appendices: • Must be referenced in the main body • Must be relevant to report objectives -unnecessary appendices will be penalized

Marking Scheme Style (/10) • Includes professionalism, relevancy, grammar and spelling, consistency Technical Content (/30) • All design factors considered, supplier found and recommended • Rational analysis, justification of design, consideration of alternatives Conclusion (/10) • Understandable without reading the body • Should be succinct Poster (/5) • Present a summary of your report during last week of class
