  3. General Information 1 Statehood Illinois became the 21st state to be added the union on December 13, 1818. Abbreviation The abbreviation for Illinois is IL. Nickname Illinois is nicknamed the Prairie State because of its flat, wide open spaces.

He was born February 6, 1911 in Tampico, IL.

Illinois State Quarter • A farm scene and the Chicago skyline appear on opposite sides of the outline. • The design also contains 21 stars and bears the inscriptions "21st State/Century" and "Land Of Lincoln." The Illinois state quarter is the third U.S. coin to feature Lincoln but the first to feature him as a young man.

  18. Interesting Sites to Visit in Illinois New Salem Abraham Lincoln first came to the New Salem village at the age of 21 and lived here for 6 years. It is now currently a historic state park, featuring replicas of the buildings from that time period as well as interpreters dressed in costumes.

Sears Tower in Chicago is the tallest building on the North American Continent. The first Aquarium opened in Chicago in 1893.

The world’s largest public library with a collection of over 2 million books is The Chicago Public Library. The Chicago River is dyed green on St. Patrick’s Day. Illinois was the first state to ratify the 13th Amendment to the Constitution abolishing slavery in 1865.
