  2. Units of Measure • Customary Measurements

  3. What are customary measurements used for?

  4. Customary measurements are measurements that are use in our every day life. • Length, weight, liquid, solids and temperature are some customary measurements • For example you can find them in a store or in a doctor’s office.

  5. How to convert units? • Use proportions • Ex. 54 in= yd

  6. Step no.1 • Ask yourself , “how many inches are in a yard?” • Ex. 36 in. equals a yard

  7. Step no.2 • When a measurement is smaller than the other measurement you divide. When the measurement is larger you multiply. • Ex. Inches are smaller than yards, you divide.

  8. Step no.3 • Divide 54 by 36. • It equals I but you have 18 left over.

  9. The no. 1 becomes your whole number and the 18 left over becomes you numerator. Ex. 1 18/36 (simplify)= 1 ½ The answer is 54 in.= 1 ½ yd. The Answer!
