  3. Standards-Based Learning All elementary classrooms in Valley View focus on learning standards to teach the key skills that students need to master. This includes daily lessons by teachers and the report card that is sent home to our families.

  4. Standards-Based Learning According to the National Parent Teacher Association (NPTA), focusing on learning standardsis the most effective wayto prepare students for success in college and/or a career.

  5. Standards-Based Learning • Improves focus on unique learning goals for each student • Creates high quality lessons that prioritize key skills • Ensures feedback that moves each student forward

  8. Literacy Curriculum Our curricular resources are aligned to the Common Core English Language Arts Standards. • builds upon students’ literacy skills and the continuum of learning • Standards are broken down by quarters to dig deeper into literacy skills and strategies

How will this curriculum be taught within the classroom? • students will be reading many books at various levels • writing will be in a variety of genres across all subjects • working in small groups and one-on-one • progress reports reflect the standards and allow for reporting growth and achievement

  10. Word Study • Students will be receiving their own workbooks at the end of the month that are at their personal skill level.

  11. What are the benefits to parents? Students will be reading and writing throughout the entire day… which means… • time to LOVE reading and writing • plenty of books to choose from and bring home

Social Studies = Social Science • Social Studies is rated as a skill under Literacy on the report card • Concepts and ideas will be reflected within the English Language Arts learning • Social Science concepts require reading and writing to comprehend • Topics in the Social Science standards are: history, economics, geography, government, finance • Implemented with Scholastic News

  21. Mystery Science • Mystery Science’s mission is to help children stay curious. They believe teachers and parents deserve better resources to help children investigate the mysteries of this endlessly fascinating world! • Online videos that promote higher-order questioning and thinking skills. • Students get hand-on activities with every lesson.

Greatminds Science Pilot • Consist of four modules, each grounded in coherent scientific knowledge to engage students and set them up for success in the study of science. • Knowledge: Throughout each module, students engage with all three dimensions of the NGSS Standards and integrate those dimensions to build deep scientific understanding. • Coherence: Each module weaves a storyline in which students make sense of compelling phenomena. Each lesson builds on the previous lesson so students understand more about the anchor phenomenon and their prior experiences • Engagement: Students actively engage in the process of asking questions about phenomena, exploring those questions, analyzing information, and applying new knowledge to solve real-world problems in engineering challenges or to investigate the natural world in science challenges.

Responsive Classroom • Is an evidence-based approach to teaching that focuses on engaging academics, positive community, effective management, and developmental awareness.  • Educators create safe and joyful learning communities where students develop strong social and academic skills and every student can thrive.

  25. Morning Meeting • Morning meetings are taking place in every classroom in the building. • Helps build a community. • Consists of morning message, greeting, and share

  26. Closing Circle • Students come together at the end of the day to reflect on their learning and share what they are looking forward to tomorrow.

  27. Second-Step Program • Approximately 22 week program meant to be taught within the classroom setting collaboratively by teachers and social workers once a week for about 30 minutes. • Second Step provides daily academic activity ideas to reinforce the lesson.
