  1. one Introduction to Density Objective: To calculate density given mass and volume in order to explain how density is a characteristic property. CSI Note: How is density different from mass? IS YOUR HOMEWORK OUT?? Drill: 1. Get a Lesson Sheet from the SET. 2. Complete the Drill portion only. CS-6A

  2. one Introduction to Density • Think about a pound of gold and a pound of marshmallows. Answer each question below. Think carefully!!! • Which one weighs more? ____________ • Which one takes up more space? _______ • Which one has more mass? ____________ CS-6A

  3. one Introduction to Density Definition: Density – the amount of matter (mass) in a given space (volume) – the mass per unit (1) volume ???? What word could you use to represent the concept of density???? ???? How can you show density? ???? ???? How can you explain the density of a single substance???? CS-6A

  4. one Introduction to Density • Let’s explore the units: g/mL or g/cm3 • What does this mean? • The number of grams in 1 mL of a substance or… • The number of grams in 1 cm3of a substance CS-6A

  5. one Introduction to Density • To find the density: • Divide the mass by the volume. • Density = Mass ÷ Volume CS-6A

  6. one Introduction to Density Ex. 56 g of ONK takes up a space of 7 cm3. What is its density? Density = Mass ÷ Volume Density = 56g ÷ 7 cm3 Density = 8 g/cm3 CS-6A

  7. one Introduction to Density **The density of a substance at a given temperature is the same for all samples of that substance, thus making density a characteristic property. CS-6A

  8. one Introduction to Density • Calculate the density:Show 3 lines of work. (2 decimal places) • Substance 1: Mass = 85 g Volume = 10 cm3 • Density = Mass ÷ Volume • Density = 85 g ÷ 10 cm3 • Density = 8.5 g/cm3 CS-6A

  9. one Introduction to Density • Calculate the density:Show 3 lines of work. (2 decimal places) • Substance 2:Mass = 150 g Volume = 2.5 cm3 • Density = Mass ÷ Volume • Density = 150 g ÷ 2.5 cm3 • Density = 60 g/cm3 CS-6A

  10. one Introduction to Density • Calculate the density:Show 3 lines of work. (2 decimal places) • Substance 3:Mass = 33.92 g Volume = 3.2 cm3 • Density = Mass ÷ Volume • Density = 33.92 g ÷ 3.2 cm3 • Density = 10.6 g/cm3 CS-6A

  11. one Introduction to Density If you had 200g of Substance 1, what would the density of the substance be? CS-6A

  12. one Introduction to Density If you had 5.0 cm3of Substance 2, what would the density of the substance be? CS-6A

  13. one Introduction to Density If you had any amount of Substance 1, what would the density of the substance be? CS-6A

  14. one Introduction to Density WHY???? Density is a characteristic property!!! It does not change for a given substance!!! CS-6A

  15. one Introduction to Density HOMEWORK: Complete Ditto. 2. Drop objects in water and write your observations. (Maybe a chart) CS-6A
