  3. Characteristics of Inappropriate Content • Trivial or does not have a clear purpose • Meaning is lost when taken from the source and placed on slides • Presented in its original form as a/an • Emotional speech • Historical declaration • Memoir • Examples: Gettysburg Address, “I Have a Dream Speech”, Declaration of Independence

  4. Characteristics of Appropriate Content • To Educate • Present a topic, explain procedures • To Persuade • Advertise, sell • To Narrate, Broadcast Messages, or Entertain • Display name of students, words of a song or speech for audience participation, list of location changes at a conference, etc

  6. What method of information disbursement is most effective?

  7. Methods of Delivery and Distribution • Group Delivery with Speaker • Group Delivery without Speaker • Continuous Loop • Rolling Script • Self-Serve • As hardcopy

  8. Group Delivery with Speaker • Used as a supplement (visual) to the speaker • Slide show should NOT contain so much information that is can substitute for the speaker • Displays graphic items that enhance communication Example

  9. Group Delivery without Speaker • Played one time to an audience • Does not require explanation or interpretation • May be displayed to entertain prior to a speech or event • May be used to inform an audience about procedures Example

  10. Continuous Loop • Played repeatedly until manually stopped • May or may not have a logical beginning and end • Often used at trade shows where people rotate through at different times • May be used to broadcast general information Example

  11. Rolling Script • Played at a moderate pace to allow for user participation • Usually stand-alone, such as a prop for posting the lyrics of a song or the lines of a poem • Contemporary Church Services

  12. Self-Serve • Maybe delivered via a website (Microsoft training) • Self-paced, user friendly and often interactive • May be accompanied by a narration embedded within the presentation http://itdp.providence.edu/Training/PowerPoint_Resources.htm Example

  13. As Hardcopy (printed on paper) • To enable comprehension • Effective when the content is foreign, has to be remembered, is procedural, or is presented in a large group • Handout with 3 slides per page allows room for the audience to record notes beside slide • Can be distributed in color, grayscale, or black and white

  14. Hard copy (cont) • To assist the speaker • One slide per page and notes for the speaker • Outline view without graphics • Speaker has the notes or outline in front of her/him while presentation is displayed in the background
