  2. Vary by Form Simple Sentence: Mary ran home. Complex Sentence: After the bullies attacked her, Mary ran home. Compound Sentence: The bullies attacked her and Mary ran home.

  3. Vary by type of sentence: • Declarative • Interrogative • Imperative • Exclamatory

  4. Vary by using initial words and phrases: Crying, Mary ran home. After school, Mary ran home.

  5. Vary by length: Use a combination of long and short sentences. Include a “taffy sentence” if appropriate.

  6. Taffy Sentences: Use to stretch and emphasize an idea. • “I see the clock, the green, fluorescent clock. The green, flourescent, it-looks-like-I-just-might-beat-30-minutes clock. • The thought of a smaller house was comforting. The thought of a smaller, new home was appealing.
