  1. Matthew 16:13-19 • Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, v. 13 • He asked, “whom do men say that I the son of Man am?” v. 13. • The Different Answers, v. 14: • “Some say thou art John the Baptist,” • “Some Elijah” • “Others Jeremiah” • “Or one of the prophets.”

  2. V. 15, What do you Say? • Peter’s Answer: “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the Living God,” v. 16. • Jesus’ Reply: “Blessed art thou Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven,” v. 17. • Jesus’ Promise: “..upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it,” v. 18.

  3. Observations: Isaiah 28:16 points to that of which Jesus spoke in Matthew 16:18. “I will build My Church” – settles the fact of the church. Verse 19 settles the question regarding the Government of the church, or that by which the church will be instructed. Cf. John 16:13; Acts 2:42

  4. The Nature of the church; It is Spiritual in Nature! • Nature: “the particular combination of qualities belonging to a person or thing by birth or constitution.” The “inherent qualities” of a person or thing. • There are two realms: • Natural, I Corinthians 2:14-15. • Spiritual, John 18:36.

  5. Its Spiritual Nature is Suggested by: • The Word “church,” 2 Thess. 2:14. • Its Terms of Entrance, John 3:1-6. • Its Worship, John 4:23,24; I Peter 2:5. • In keeping with the nature of God. • In keeping with the message preached. • Illustrated by the Lord’s Supper. • Illustrated by the kind of music authorized. • Its Primary Mission, I Timothy 3:15.

  6. As to its Character, it is Undenominational! • Does not have a denominational name. • It has no Denominational Creed. • It has no Denominational Headquarters. • It has no Denominational Founder. • It has no Denominational Organization. • Its Worship is Uncorrupted. • No Denominational Entanglements. • No Denominational terms for Entrance.

  7. The Necessity of the Church: • A “must” because it is the “called out.” • “Called” by the gospel, 2 Thess. 2:14. • Called into “fellowship,” I Corinthians 1:9 • Called to be children, Romans 9:25-26. • A “must” because membership therein is necessary for reconciliation, Ephesians 2:16.

  8. The “Necessity” (Con’t) • It is a “must” because therein are the “saved,” Acts 2:47. • It is a “must” because therein are those whom Jesus will “deliver up.” • Jesus came to seek and save, Luke 19:10. • The “saved” are in the church, Acts 2:47. • The church and the kingdom (which will be delivered up, I Cor. 15:24) are the same.

  9. Conclusion: • Members of the church should appreciate and demonstrate their appreciation for the nature, character, and necessity of the church. • “Outsiders” should cast off the yoke of sin, leave religious error and sinful activities, and become members therein and thereof simply by obeying the saving gospel of Jesus!
