  1. ERESE SUMMER WORKSHOP GROUP 2 PRESENTATION How do we identify mid ocean ridges? by Bruce, Clyda, Katie, Nancy, and Sandie With support from Bridget, Hillary, and Jill

  2. HYPOTHESIS The symmetry of magnetic anomalies can be used to determine the location of spreading centers. How do we identify mid ocean ridges?

  3. METHOD AND MATERIALS The following websites were used to observe patterns and connections on the ocean floor to identify mid-ocean ridges.  Observations were made and data was collected to be analyzed. How do we identify mid ocean ridges?

  4. 1. magnetic polarities along an iceland ridge How do we identify mid ocean ridges?

  5. 2. animation of magnetic anomalies Spreading Center Animation (select above link, click on escape to view) How do we identify mid ocean ridges?

  6. 3. cross section formation of magnetic anomalies in sea floor spreading How do we identify mid ocean ridges?

  7. 4. line graphs of magnetic anomalies found around the world How do we identify mid ocean ridges?

  8. DATA AND RESULTS • Observations of link one showed linear/parallel patterns in a northeast to southwest orientation.   The pattern extended out from the center in alternating bands of magnetic intensity.  Mirror images were observed on both sides of the center. • Observations of link two showed compass point changes as the spreading center progressed throughout geologic time. Patterns are repeated on both sides of the center. • Observations of link three show directional arrows under the surface at the ocean ridge.  There is a progression of blocks showing movement over a period of time.  Mirrored patterns are repeated from the center moving in an outward direction. • Observations of link four show that patterns of magnetic anomalies have occurred on four separate areas on the earth's ocean basins.  Even though each graph varies from the next, all patterns are mirrored images repeated from a central point. How do we identify mid ocean ridges?

  9. ANALYSIS AND CONCLUSION In conclusion, there is overwhelming evidence of a relationship between alternating bands of magnetic intensity and the location of divergent plate movement.  This relationship appears to repeat itself in various locations throughout the ocean basins with the same characteristic symmetry  of anomalies  across the  spreading center.  How do we identify mid ocean ridges?

  10. APPLICATION The application of the data would lead researchers to predict the location of divergent plate boundaries based on patterns of magnetic anomalies.  This allows researchers the ability to locate and identify spreading centers in an economical time sensitive manner. How do we identify mid ocean ridges?
