Recent lapses in awareness regarding the security of NATO Classified information have led to significant issues concerning email transmissions. Numerous emails dispatched from the SHAPE Unclassified networks have inadvertently included NATO Classified data. Personnel are strongly advised to conduct thorough checks on any documents and attachments prior to sending them via email. Ensure that no NATO Classified information or markings are present. Remember, you hold personal responsibility for safeguarding NATO information. Always check and verify before sending emails over the Internet.

E-MAIL TRANSMISSIONS There has been a lapse in individual awareness regarding the security of NATO Classified information. A recent spate of E-mail transmission security violations has highlighted a major security concern. A large number of E-mails sent from SHAPE UNCLASSIFIED networks over the Internet have included NATO CLASSIFIED information. Any person who has a requirement to share information via E-mail is to carry out a full and thorough check of their document and any attachments included in the E-mail. Personnel are to ensure that the document does not carry any NATO CLASSIFIED information and / or markings if it is to be transmitted over the Internet. Be aware of “overwriting” template documents / presentations as they may have previously been a Classified document All users are reminded that they have personal security responsibilities regarding the safeguarding of NATO information.
