  5. What do students feel like?

  6. How can we help students? • PLATO/COMPASS alignment • Counseling & Advising suggest students sign up for PLATO/COMPASS module. • We enroll them, give them the website, log in information and the rest is up to them. • More students ask for the information then use it

  8. Summer Bridge for at-risk students Two Schools—East Detroit & Grand Haven Pilot at request of schools and coordinated with Achieving the Dream program COMPASS Diagnostics & Math given in May Intervention early June, Post test late June

  9. East Detroit In Macomb County Boarders Detroit on the South at 8 Mile Rd. Population 32,000 in 5.1 Square Miles Major Employer is the K-12 school system at 1000 Medium income $50,000. Next largest is the grocery score with 180 employees Illiteracy rate around 13% in the county, Wayne County is 36% and the City of Detroit is 47%

  10. New Haven Population 5000 on 4.6 Squire Miles Distance 23 miles North East of Eastpointe 38 Miles from Detrot Largest employer is a small business with less then 100 employees Medium income $40,000.

The Pilot • Faculty decided that there were specific areas of intervention that students needed and only wanted them to take COMPASS Math and specific diagnostics • Diagnostics included: • Basic Operations (Fractions) • Basic Operations (Decimals) • Exponents, Square Roots & Scientific Notation • Basic Operations with Polynomials

  12. COMPASS TESTING & DIAGNOSTICS COMPASS Diagnostics taken early May COMPASS Math taken late may Intervention early June Posttest late June Order of testing result of miscommunication between various parties…caught by accident at a academic unit meeting

  13. Results A wide variety of initial scores from all students Fifty nine tested and 33 participated 22 students had a positive change after the intervention Not all students completed the posttest

Follow Up All students received information about using PLATO as a tool to continue math improvement Many of these students will be attending Macomb this Fall and Institutional Research will be conducting further studies on their Math test, including PLATO usage and if they accessed tutoring during their first semester

  15. Summary COMPASS & PLATO have a alignment that can help students prepare for the Placement Test COMPASS Diagnostics can inform students and faculty about needed remediation PLATO tutorials can help students before classes start and be a support during classes
