  1. How to Bleed a Radiator

  2. If your radiator is on, but the home feels warmer than it should, it is possible that there is trapped air, a problem that should be easily fixed by bleeding the radiator. All you need to fix this common problem in the simplest way, is a few tools and a little patience.

  3. Bleeding Radiators Made EasyThe key to bleeding a radiator is to let all the air out, before filling it with water.   4. Do It Yourself: Bleeding Radiators If you decide to attempt bleeding radiators, you will need the following:*radiator valve key*flat head screw driver*pliers*rags

  5. Hydronic heating works on a closed system. When in use, the air will separate from the water, finding a place to build up. This is a problem that affects the top floor in particular.Unless the air is removed the radiator will malfunction or stop working altogether. The air has to be removed, using the process of bleeding to replace the build-up air with water once again and restoring the system to its proper function. Ideally, this should be done before heating season.

  6. Bleeding Radiators: Step-by-StepBefore you can bleed radiators, you need to find out which systems require attention. Turn up the temperature on the heating system and check all the radiators, which should all be the same temperature. If some are cool at the top, those radiators require bleeding. Turn off the boiler, and follow the following steps.

  7. 1. Find the small valve near the top of each radiator. You can use a radiator key, pliers or a screw driver to slowly open the valve. 2. Have a rag ready to catch water that may come out. There will be a hissing noise while the air comes out, and once the air is out, water will start coming out. This water is dirty, so do not let it stain your floors and carpets.

  8. Note: If no air or water comes out, be sure to call Hoerner Heating & Plumbing, as this is an indication of system failure.3. Once you are satisfied that there is no more air, quickly close the valve and check if there are any leaks. 4. Wait a few minutes while the system adds more water to the radiators.

  9. 5. Check to see if there is enough pressure on the boiler. Residential heating systems should be at 12-15 PSI. 6. Repeat steps 1-5 with each radiator that requires bleeding before turning the heat down again.
